Very impressed by what the owners have done with this space so was keen to try. Interior is tastefully decorated and the tables arenโt too close together. The high ceiling allows diners to chat without the noise become a cacophony of noise (which is rare these days). Waiting staff were very pleasant and knowledgable although the greeters need to be much more enthusiastic. This is a restaurant in a quiet part of town that needs to wow people to give them the advantage. That should start with a โhi folks, welcome, how are you today?โ and a โthanks for coming, I hope you enjoyed it and we look forward to seeing you againโ. Both were missing. In fact, one of the greeters was so glum I thought his mind was not really in the building. Maybe an off day (we can all have them) but as first time diners here it didnโt help. Impressed by the offer of an amuse-bouche from kitchen (mint and cucumber gazpacho) which was nice. Starters were rabbit/chicken terrine and hot smoked salmon mousse which were tasty. Mains were asparagus mint and pea risotto along with chicken breast in red pepper sauce with veg and olive tapenade. My guest said it was nice but the tapenade seemed surplus to what was needed. The risotto was presented well and tasted delicious at the right temperature. We shared a cheese board and another couple of wines (wines are excellent and a good selection). Hats off to the waiter who showed both knowledge and enthusiasm when describing the cheeses. Itโs a lovely setting and ambience and needs to remain part of the Edinburgh dining experience, but in tough times due to cost of living and staff shortages they need to concentrate on the things that actually cost nothing. A cheery hello, a genuine farewell and all the bits that make your visit truly memorable. I want to go back. Itโs done enough to make me want to do so, but will it make me REALLY want to return after my next...
ย ย ย Read moreMy Mum and I went here on our recent visit to Edinburgh. They transformed an old public toilet on the Water of Leith. It was lightly sprinkling when we were there and we were seated right next to the window so we had a lovely view of the rain on the water, which was very relaxing.
I started with the courgette and fennel soup which was nice for a rainy summer day. I then had pork tenderloin with braised shallots and crushed potatoes, and the Edinburgh mess for dessert. My Mum had the game terrine, trout, and crรจme brulรฉe.
The food was very tasty. I just felt that my choices were limited by the very brief menu selection so I was a little let down by the mains as there was only one dish that suited me. I love lamb but I didn't like the sound of spiced tomato chickpeas it was paired with. However, I like that the ingredients are all very fresh and local. It's nice getting to enjoy that freshness and quality since I live in the States.
It's a great location, I love the history behind the structure, and the food tasted delicious. I just wish there was maybe a couple more dishes in the mains to pick from including a nice homey Scottish lamb dish since that's my favourite.
However I would recommend and I would go back again, especially on a rainy day at the table next...
