My husband and I started our honeymoon here and I cannot recommend it more! It gave a very authentic feel, which was wonderful for our first exposure to Edinburgh. The staff was all incredible and so kind as well as helpful. They cleaned our room each day and made sure it was tidy upon our return, which was a very nice touch. The staff was always kind when we came back late or wanted a drink even after the bar had closed. They even let us keep our luggage there after check out until we had departed. We were able to walk to many pubs, stores and restaurants very easily from here. I will also mention the history itself is very unique and I loved getting to learn more during our stay. If we do get a chance to come back, we will definitely be staying here again.

Room wasn't what we expected as it was in the basement, wasn't advertised as basement room, just a standard room, it was a dark room no view and very small bathroom and shower if you are tall it's no good to you as the ceiling in the bathroom to low, just check when you book not to get a basement room. Also, it smells really bad, like drains smell. Breakfast was delicious and hot , full Scottish breakfast, but no bake beans . The service was great, very friendly staff. Good location.

We are from TX, USA and booked this hotel for our honeymoon in Edinburgh. Our expectation was an average stay at a reasonable price, with a historical/bed and and breakfast vibe. The entrance and common areas reflected that expectation. As we make our way to our room, that changes. The walk to our room required multiple staircases, multiple hallways, and 4 - 5 doors. It was unbelievable, like we were inside a maze. Then we got to our room. It was incredibly small. Terrible view, and the furnishings were old, musty and outdated. The worst part of our stay was our "bumpy lumpy" bed. Late in the evening of our 1st (and only) night, my husband went to the lobby and explained that it was our honeymoon. Obviously he asked if we could upgrade our room or if anything could be done for us. He was told they were "completely sold out". Then he was told that if we wanted to make any changes to our reservation, we needed to call Hotels.com because our booking was through them. That's fair, but I wish we had been treated a little better considering it was our honeymoon. Watching my husband come back from the front desk looking so defeated is something I will never forget. He is a sweet man and deserved better customer service that night. Ultimately we just wanted to check-out early without getting penalized for the remainder of our stay. I mean, if they were "completely sold out" then they should be happy to have a free room back, right? When we finally checked out, the woman at the desk was strange, off-putting and unapologetic. We were very civil, never carried on or complained or yelled but finally we simply said, we just could not get any sleep on that bed. She said nothing to us. We left for a Hilton and never got a follow-up for a manager or anything. I would never recommend this...

We stayed in room number 341. It is the street facing room in the annex. The bathroom was good sized, although by no means luxurious. The room was cramped. For some reason it had to side chairs. The important feature of those is that neither my husband, nor I could fit our hips in those. And we are not happy people. The room would be better without them. There is a luggage rack, and the closet is roomy. 40-inch (max?) TV mounted above the desk far from the bed. Windows open, which is necessary for cooling, but there is so much street noise even late at night. We chose to stay here because of the location and that was the defining feature of the place. Even the cab driver told us we were in a good location! Walk to touristy stuff but also close to the areas where people live and enjoy the city. Breakfast was unimpressive; we skipped it the second and third days. It feels good to support the veterans association, which is what this house is for, so were we to return I would probably stay again, but expect nothing of the breakfast and try to stay in...
