Read moreI visited the Scottish Gallery this month as part of a frequent browse of Dundas Street galleries. As it happened, my mother visited independently last month too. This review score relates to the lower level of the gallery, where craft and smaller objects are sold. The top floor had, as usual, a carefully curated and excellent exhibition. Downstairs there was a supercilious young woman who evidently finds it too much effort to raise her eyes and greet her customers; rather, she flicked her eyes at me and then made herself look as busy as she could with other things. As a former gallery director I observed with interest as she then engaged with another member of staff,discussing a minor stock install in loud voices, not having bothered to greet me. This was the same experience that my mother had on a separate visit this December. I found it a little absurd that independently, we both visited and were ready to spend money on gifts of art and jewellery, but were emphatically dissuaded by the terrible attitude of a member of gallery staff. While there are many important elements to working in galleries public or private, greeting visitors and potential purchasers should come first. As a result, I spent money elsewhere and I left with the sense that the staff had an attitude problem that bordered...
