1st impressions count, yes they definitely do. Greeted by the maître d' who was welcoming and took us to our table (we hadn't booked, it was around 9.30am on a tuesday) it was relatively busy for this time but there were enough tables available. At the table he went through the specials and I took this opportunity to visit the toilets. Impressed by the cleanliness, I would also point out that they are down a flight of stairs, not sure if there is an accessible one on the same floor, or a lift to downstairs, it's worth checking beforehand to prevent any issues. Back to the review. I loved the atmosphere, there is no music playing and it's just people having breakfast and speaking to one another, spot on. The order was placed, and I went for a scone to start followed by avocado smash. The scone was the right temperature and the perfect temperature, warm and generous, and even the butter provided was not solid requiring a blow torch to melt it like most places, great touch, and the clotted cream and jam was brilliant, the latte ordered was generously sized and it was uber smooth. Forgot to ask which bean they use, it was lovely. Now the Avocado smash was nothing short of brilliant, presented with a poached egg on top, cooked to perfection, no runny white bits, just perfect, yolk the correct texture, and the layers all gave a different experience with every bite, the accompanying vinaigrette based dressing was delightful. The portion was spot on, my only critique would be to use a slightly larger slice of toast it sits on, a half size more and it would be perfect, despite that its still not enough to be marked down as it may be enough for some however at the same time it may not be, but i wouldn't let it stop me ordering again, I would just order a side of toast, its that good. 10/10. Staff were attentive and polite and checked in to make sure everything was ok, smiles all round. If you're looking for somewhere bright, spacious, relaxed, near town, with excellent breakfast options then Loudons has to be on that list. I'll be visiting again to try out some more of...
Read moreI had a full breakfast (i.e. full Scottish fry up) and I don’t understand how you can offer a 14 pound cooked breakfast without including the cheapest ingredient in the plate (2 slices of toast). This has nothing to do with the staff or service- who were nice - but there is something seriously wrong with getting asked if you’d like toast with your full Scottish as if it’s something optional —— it’s not far off being asked if you’d like pasta with your sauce — like of course I want carbs with my meal - and then if you (as any sane person would ) do in fact want toast, it’ll cost you an extra 2.50! The meal does come with one rather limp tattie scone, and tbh these barely hit the spot. The sausage wasn’t bad but wasn’t good. The black pudding was a bit undercooked for my liking, but the only other glaring flaw is that the baked beans were homemade and had herbs and things and were dry and essentially not what you’d expect or want. It’s all well and good trying to be fancy, but ultimately this meal would’ve been infinitely better if you just served normal Heinz baked beans and chucked in a badly needed slice of toast. I have had better fry ups made by a hungover mate who’s running on 2 hours sleep and chucked the ingredients in the same pan. The one exception is that the poached egg was perfectly cooked (clearly no talent lacking in the chef’s skills- but more importantly the establishment itself has made silly decisions with the menu). I find it remarkable that any place can make a fry up badly because it takes very little skill to do it well, but this overpriced establishment has managed it. Won’t be coming back. If you want a quality Fry up in Edinburgh, try La Viola round thé corner. Their Full Scottish is impeccable- it includes toast and tattle scones, and...
Read moreVery patchy cooked breakfast. This was our 1st visit to Loudons, we won't be back. Nice airy restaurant, staff were pleasant, nice coffee. Into the food. I love a cooked breakfast, I am passionate about it, that's why I gave this place a 2/5. Its almost like the chef has never eaten a cooked breakfast, seemed like there was no frame of reference.
The Bad: Homemade baked beans. This is a great idea, executed terribly. The haricot beans had not been soaked anywhere near long enough, so they were hard and dry. The table sitting next to us also complained about the beans. Sausages. Not a bad quality sausage, but they were peely-wally. No colour on them at all (see pic) Looking at them made me sad. To think a noble pig gave up it's life for this insipid looking fare. The sausage was also barely warm. Bacon. Again not a bad quality product, but it was overcooked and therefore dry. Tomato. My tomato was totally raw. It may have been in the same vicinity as a hot surface, but I don't think they met. The good: The haggis and black pudding were both fine. The scrambled eggs were cooked well. There was a homemade potato scone, which is to be applauded, it tasted pretty good, but also needed some colour.
There is no issue with the quality of the ingredients, the application is really patchy though. You eat with your eyes, no one wants to eat pale looking food. Get some colour on there. £13 for a cooked breakfast, is on the high side. What we got on the plate today is not worth that. I am afraid we...
