The motivation for making Sunday the day he stopped instead of walking past was that the other half had just spent 28 hours on a coach and could only muster the energy to make it to the end of the road. Word of Mouth is, moreover, one of the better reviewed small cafes in Edinburgh and the place was packed. Breakdown: 👩🏼🍳Taste 4/5 - Headlined by the waffles, the smoked salmon and the coffee. Smoked salmon can often provoke scepticism but this was good quality and very tasty. The coffee was strong and dark, and the waffles were sweet and soft. We were both very happy. 👀Presentation 3/5 - Totally fine. Nothing remarkable, nothing unattractive. Definition of a 3/5 🌟Vibe 4/5 - Word of Mouth treads that line between madness and excitement. It is a very small space with lots of hungry customers, so at times it was a bit overwhelming. But the waiters were friendly and the service good. It picks up a late extra mark for a very in depth bit of cricket chat with a Bangladeshi waiter as we paid our bill. We’re both fans of Mahmudullah, neither of us like...
Read moreWe went there for a chai and a hot chocolate - both were very powdery and grainy tasting. After being there for roughly under an hour, more people had entered (with seats still available), the server who was an older shorter man, was unpleasant and started saying it’s a business, you have to go, basically ushering us out. If there were customers waiting to be seated, I could’ve understood maybe the urgency of the getting a table cleared. But you still do not yell across the room with customers to let us know you would like us to go. Wouldn’t recommend going there.
EDITED:
Hello, I do not know where you’re getting your information that ‘my friend arrived at 9:15, and I arrived a bit later’, I can 100% assure you this is not the case - you can check your own CCTV to see the timings.
We arrived together - not separately, around 12pm and left around 1pm. Meaning that we only spent around 1 hour and not 3 hours as you’ve mentioned.
As I mentioned previously, there were no customers waiting to be seated. We would’ve had no problem if there were customers waiting to be seated and your employee had approached us in a respectful manner. Not talking to us across multiple customers.
As an employer I understand you want to protect your employee, but this warrants no right to make claims against me which aren’t...
Read moreHad the veggie breakfast and it was subpar. You receive baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, one egg, toast, a thin potato cake and vegetarian sausages. The one egg is meagre (why not two... that’s usually the standard) but fine. The mushrooms were also fine, but the baked beans and veg sausages tasted cheap, the thin potato cake was bland with an uninspiring texture, and the toast wasn’t very tasty. What happened to toasting slices of good crusty sourdough or even a crusty white?
I’d mix this up and make it two eggs (scrambled, poached or fried), scrap the veg sausages, keep the mushrooms and tomatoes, and add avocado and housemade hash browns.
Admittedly, I’ve been spoiled by all the wonderful brunch spots in Australia where they have it down to a T so that may have influenced this less than favourable review. On a positive note, the staff were attentive, and the...
