I was in Brass Monkey Leith Walk yesterday at approximately 18:15-19:30. I bought a coffee and started eating a cake that I had brought in. The pub does not sell cake. A white barman came over and told me to stop eating. I did so and then ate a bit more cake later. He came over again, told me to stop eating and I did so. When my friend and I were getting ready to leave and I was waiting as my friend had gone to the toilet, I had another bite. The barman must have been watching me for about an hour because he immediately came over and told me off again for eating cake. I reminded him that their pub doesn't sell cake. I was so angry when I left the pub that I was shaking. I am still thinking about it today, hence the review. Not a nice atmosphere and I found the barman unreasonable and aggressive. My friend and I both wondered if he would have treated me the same way had I been a man. I am not going to a Brass...
Read moreThere's a lot to be said for the Brass Monkey. It's in a good location, large and with friendly staff and a food menu.
I would go back. In fact, I've been many times and always had a mixed experience. I suggest the monkey is a victim of its own success.
The Brass Monkey is frequently too busy. I don't want to eat if I can't avoid clashing elbows with people when I try and use any cutlery. I don't want to fight to the bar if it means losing my seat and having to fight for another.
It's not really the monkey's fault they're successful but I wonder if they could tweak the table layout. Could they even consider raising prices a little? That might discourage a small percentage but encourage the rest of us to return more often and spend more.
Despite my concerns remember this - looking for a good food pub on Leith Walk? Consider the...
Read moreStaff here seems doesn't like to work; my dog and we felt we shouldn't be there even we arrived there at 12.25pm.(they open at 12pm!) Waited for few minutes in front of the door, but no one appeared. as no one was there, we had to go and find someone in the bar. The person who was doing something with his laptop reluctantly confirmed that we can have a seat "where ever". We went to seat whereever but he even didn't give the drink menu. (Of course he didn't ask to order drinks) Very weird weird place. we felt we mustn't be there. We went there for having lunch but got forced to leave and not to order. Since we got impression that we were not welcomed and staff don't want to be interrupted by customers, we left there and went to other place. Very weird, we got felt they don't want to sell anything at 12.30pm. We won't go this...
