I was on holiday with my parents staying in Wirksworth and we visited bakewell and on a rainy day we popped into the upstairs cafe .
The owner was quite literally one of the nicest people I've ever met so I hope he doesn't feel offended by this review and understands that it is only my honest opinion.
I loved the internal decor and feel of the place and the seats were incredibly comfortable and stylish
The food however is where it all went wrong for me , I had steak pie , potatoes, mushy pees and gravey
The potatoes were absolutely amazing but everything including the peas was swimming in gravey I'd have much preferred if the gravey had been in a gravey boat so I could have poured on the armour I wanted and the peas would also have been better in a ramekin .
The pie was fine accept they clearly had used tinned steak and it was dry and tough .
The owner was literally in the process of selling the place after many years there and the gift shop was already closed etc so I have to apologise for this review if they feel I'm judging unfairly but this is my personal experience.
I must say once again how incredibly nice the owner was , he has been there a very long time and clearly cares about his business and his customers so maybe this was purely due to him being in the process of retirement and selling up .
I wish him and his wife good health and a wonderful...
Read moreOn a very wet day I called in for coffee. Never having been here before I had some difficulty finding the door, which is rather concealed. There are four short flights of stairs to the cafe, which makes it a pleasantly calm place free of the usual clutter of prams that plague so many cafés today. The service is excellent and the coffee excellent. There's a comprehensive menu to suit the majorit, unfortunately I can't eat in these places because like Jordan Peterson, I discovered that most foods cause inflammation diseases in me. I would have been happy to spend more time there but Bakewell has some serious problems on the parking front, and the roads are permanently jammed with traffic. Anyway this is a pleasantl venue as are the staff.
Further to my review yesterday, I must add that I have been to most of the cafés in Bakewell over the last few months. I have concluded that the Upstairs Cafe is definitely the best and serves the best...
Read moreNice place, but easy to miss as it is tuck to the right hand side of a deli, which was closed and made us initially think the cafe was too. We actually visited twice in one day, as the latte we had about 10am was really nice, so we went back at lunchtime for food. I had a lovely chunky lasagne that came with garlic bread and salad and it really was worth the money. As its upstairs it's not really suitable for the disabled or anyone with a pushchair and small children, as I wasn't aware of a lift. The mend toilet was a bit weird with only having a single cubicle, where was room for a urinal too (could be that people coming up the stairs may be able to see when the door was open?) Staff were very friendly and the service was good. Price was maybe a tat over priced, but it is a tourist area and things are going up in general, so not really a complaint. Would I visit again? Most definitely if I'm in...
