We visited this restaurant on NYE. All I can say is I wish we hadn’t. Before we even arrived at the restaurant I was texted to ask where I was and that my table would be given away, this was at 5pm and my table was booked for 7pm. When we arrived we were sat on a table for 2 which was so close to the 2 tables next to us we were practically having dinner with them! The door was letting in a draft and the atmosphere was flatter then a pancake! Once seated we noticed all customers coming in being challenged on their bookings and some even leaving as there was no table for them! When our starter arrived ( the sharing platter) it was stone cold and for £20 was the most pathetic portion I’ve ever seen- not impressed. Our mains came and although a slight improvement, when our plates were cleared we were asked after being there 45 mins at 7.45pm, that the table was needed back in 10 minutes…. We hadn’t even been in the restaurant 1 hour! When I challenged this I was told that this is the restaurant policy 😂 I would not recommended this restaurant to anyone or go back. The waiter we had was rude, the restaurant was cold, tables crammed in, food way overpriced and just poorly run in general with no customer service skills whatsoever. It was like dining at Faulty Towers! The Old Siam in Hertford is the place to go! We wanted to try something new but safe to say we...
Read moreFirst time since it opened after years of not eating Chinese in Hertford due to there Being no decent restaurant left , we hoped it would be good.
The website makes an impressive statement "Elles Style captures the essence of Chinese cuisine. From classic favourites to new creations, our selection of fresh, handcrafted dishes is a true reflection of Elle’s rich and diverse culinary experience."
Lovely waitress - sadly the food was not good - the quarter duck was luke warm, grey and soft - lacked any kind of crispy bits normally characteristic of this dish. The sauce was watered down and almost tasteless.
No attempt at presentation a Singapore vegetable noodle dish looked dumped on the plate, lacked colour and vibrancy. At least the vegetables were crisp.
The "Szechuan chicken" was not Szechuan chicken - flavourless and szechuan pepper less / thin watery "sauce" with oil drops through it. No evidence of "extensive culinary experience" here.
Having travelled, eaten and worked extensively in china, Hong Kong and Taiwan and having had some great Chinese food uk cities - I believe this sells Chinese cuisine...
Read moreFirst time eating at Elles as we had been looking for a decent Chinese in the area for ages and she has nailed it.. The food was stunning, the service was lovely if not a little bit nervous from from the young ladies and the restaurant itself is cute. It’s small inside but they do have an upstairs, but by 7:15 on a Saturday evening the place was full! So do book. We found the tables quite tight, we ordered a lot of food and it was a struggle to squeeze it on because the presentation of the plates is quite big, but it wasn’t a problem. There were 3 of us at a four table, but the tables for two are tiny. If I had two very unimportant pieces of feedback, they would be that it’s normal in most Chinese restaurants that you would be given some prawn crackers when you are seated, these were only only on the menu to order and I really missed not having crispy seaweed… But neither of these things would stop me returning. Overall it was a winner. Will try takeaway too at some point to see how it measures up. Thank you Elle, will definitely be booking the Thai...
