Ruby's is literally one minute away from my house, so it's really weird that I had never visited before. In my defence, it's at the top of a VERY steep hill down to the prom and it's just not somewhere I would happily cycle down. And certainly not UP! However, my colleague from U3A, Margaret, had recommended it and so, on a horribly hot and humid day, we ventured forth. I was amused by a mother and her two teenage offspring sitting at a table inside, then deciding to go out on to the terrace and, when that proved FAR too hot, returned, with bright red-faces, inside. They were lucky to find a vacant table because Ruby's is clearly a popular place. It's easy to see why. Their cake selection (see my photo) is hugely impressive, while their meal selection is fairly small, it is well-priced with huge portions. Margaret asked for an omelette which, although not on the menu, was happily provided. I opted for the croque Madame (£8.95 I think, but rude to ask, because I was the guest!) which was excellent, although I think one slice of the bread would have been more than enough. Both came with a nice little side salad. The two young servers were both very friendly and efficient. From pensioners to youngsters, it's clearly a popular little cafe. Which, once it cools down a bit, I will most certainly visit again. The cakes...
Read moreBeware. The menu says meals are gluten free, but they are NOT, you need to request gluten free. It was very disappointing and potentially harmful. When our food was brought out (2 fried breakfasts) I established that it was not gf as advertised. I hadn't asked at the time of ordering as the menu was so very clear with it's GF in red after the description of a cooked breakfast. When I said that I was gluten free my plate was taken away and a gf breakfast brought out (this was done very nicely). The gf sausage was different and looked very sad and grey compared to my husband's big bangers (although he said they were overcooked and not very nice). It was disappointing as you can get excellent gf sausages. I had 2 eggs, one of which was overcooked with a solid yolk. The gf toast was surprisingly nice. I ordered a hash brown which was awful (see picture). It was greasy, overcooked/very dark brown and under seasoned, with a big chunk of onion, oddly a part of it. It had a closer affinity to a soggy rosti than a hash brown. Staff were friendly and nice. Sadly the food was not good value for money. The menu was totally misleading with regards to allergies and whilst the team swiftly rectified the mistake it meant I didn't eat at the same time as my husband and I could have been in serious pain if I had eaten the...
Read moreHello I love this place and use regularly . Today for the first time I have a complaint . A young staff member was quite rude tbh . I was sitting in the front of the shop when deliveries were being dropped off . It was a cold day to day . I asked if the door could be shut . She said no as deliveries were coming in . That was fine but the door was open for ages and in between the door could have been shut . In the end I put my coat on . The door was open for a good 15 mins by which time I was freezing. The young lass made no attempt to be emphatic and just said well I don't think it's cold and carried on with what she was doing . I usually find the staff very kind in there but not today . Was disappointed. I have a coeliacs disease and asked for a gluten free sandwich . This was not dealt with sensitively today either as it usually is . I will come back as value the service I...
