Last year I was published in the Daily Telegraph; favourite pubs article. I chose The Lamb due to fond memories. Some 50+ years ago it was my first " local." I learnt to drink Harvey's real ale here. Started a life long real beer passion. Christmas Eves in the 70's were manic. The side room was full of us youngsters singing away. Deric cannot believe I was young once! This genuinely ancient pub is special. Cellars date back to about 1180 AD. Even has ghosts. Excellent food pub. The front bar serves the locals. TV and darts.A function room upstairs once held New Years Eve discos. Been back many times over the decades living "oop north." Never see Harveys up there so need to come south to savour it. Always squeeze the Lamb In.(n)

During my first visit here a few years ago, a rather abrupt and discourteous female member of staff who informed me that all seats and tables were reserved and to go to the court bar made for a rather unpleasant visit. Common courtesy costs nothing. UPDATE 1: I revisited The Lamb and it was improved with much nicer staff. It gets 4 stars! UPDATE 2: A recent visit (September 2021) demonstrated that The Lamb was better than ever and is now a must whenever I visit Eastbourne from my home in Scotland. Two members of staff were particularly outstanding for their courtesy and high standards of service - Maria and Emily. Good luck to them and all at The Lamb.

Ok so the actual pub is lovely a beautiful old building with good beer..but the food is dire! It reads ok but it is badly cooked ,sloppily presented and quite simply is not upto scratch at all.i ate her a few months ago at friends invite and struggled to find anything good about the meal, but was there to catch up with friends so put up and shut up.another time at friends suggestion and again uninspired by the meal...last night will be my last meal here.the salad garnish was old and wilting with a strong vinegary dressing slipped on.the falafel burger in a bun was dry boring and a nod to artistic cuisine was a slice of beef tomato .presumably to help it down.! The chips were burnt and had those horrible potato eye bits still in all hard and unpleasant.the garden peas ( could anyone mess up cooking frozen peas) were oddly gritty ...didn’t go there on that one .....Battered fish was edible..which isn’t a compliment as this was a restaurant after all.all in all it was horrible..and I imagined it was the sort of food you would get when a chef has gone off sick and the cleaner has to take over....no folks won’t waste my money again on eating here ..given it 3 goes in last year and also my fellow eaters left stuff on plate so not just me moaning.the pub is lovely as a building but it lacks something...the beer is good as is the wine selection at the bar but it’s a sorry excuse...

My partner and I are currently staying here and it is our second stay at this establishment. Such a warm welcome from Nat and John and nothing is too much trouble for them . The food is all locally sourced and of the highest quality. They are operating in line with all current covid restrictions . Everything is sanitised from the tables and chairs and fresh salt and pepper pots after each customer leaves the dining area . Staff repeatedly washing and sanitising hands . We have felt really safe while staying here and as we are staying 3 nights we were given the choice of if we wanted our room serviced/ freshened or not. I would highly recommend staying at this beautiful 12th Century Inn and definitely dining in their restaurant area . Feeling sad that tonight is our last night ,but we will be back next year without a doubt. Thank you so much Nat and John and all your team ,you guys...

Pleasant lunch with friends. Restaurant was quiet (in fact we were the only people eating in that area) but this worked out perfectly as we were able to chat without disturbing anyone else and could enjoy a leisurely meal without feeling that we were blocking a table. My husband and I both had a Carribean cod and calamari curry. It was nicely presented but a little bland for my taste and the desert (frangepan tart with pear topping and biscuit crumb ice cream) was a bit disappointing. The tart, the most expensive of the 3 options on the menu, was small and very tough and at £7 did not really represent good value. On a more positive note the wines were excellent and the staff pleasant and helpful. The Lamb is a lovely pub - serves good Harveys beer and has a wonderful historic atmosphere. I think that the food could be improved but I will give it another try before rushing...
