Staff were really friendly, helpful and pretty much saved the visit because the food was not great. We ordered two burgers and the kids tomato pasta. The pasta sauce was watery, unpleasant and tasted like it was puréed tinned tomatoes with some herbs. My daughter pushed through and finished the pasta but left the sauce and I don't blame her.

The burgers were apparently 'locally sourced' but this probably meant Lidl and the pattie in the basic white buns were small, overcooked, dry and fairly tasteless. Mine had cheese and bacon on but the tiny amount of cheese hadn't melted and I could see that was cheap dry grated cheese rather than actual real cheese. Both the single bacon slice and sprinkling of cheese cost an extra £1 each.

The burgers came with quite reasonable chips, probably the best bit of the meal. They also came with the tiniest amount of coleslaw. It's ludicrous really because it's probably the cheapest part of the meal and a nice large dollop of it would have improved the meal massively. Almost £16 for a burger like this is a rip off.

The 2 main courses, children's meal, 2 cokes and a beer came to over £45 which is way over what I would have l been prepared to pay but I can only imagine people are used to paying those...

⭐ Disappointing Family Meal After Scarborough Day Trip Wasted opportunity in a charming setting.

We stopped at the Bay Horse in Pickering in mid-May 2025 after a family day out in Scarborough. The pub looked promising from the outside - potentially a real gem in this picturesque Yorkshire town.

Sadly, what followed was nearly two hours of frustration and disappointment.

Our family of five waited ages for food that can only be described as below average. Half of our order arrived, then we waited another 20 minutes for the rest. The pizzas were particularly shocking - they tasted like £2 Chicago Town frozen pizzas bunged in a microwave!

The entire experience felt like something from Fawlty Towers. Service was painfully slow, the place needed a thorough cleaning, and the value for money was terrible given the quality.

My advice? The Bay Horse should stick to serving beer and abandon food service altogether, as they can't manage it properly. Such a shame as the building has potential, but needs serious improvement in cleanliness, service speed and food quality.

I rarely write negative reviews, but I felt compelled to share our experience to help others avoid similar...

We arrived as a group of 5. 4 adults and one child. Waited 1 hour and 15 mins for them to turn up with an adult starter for the kids meal. They took it back and whilst waiting brought out some of the adult meals. Eventually the kids meal came out.

Another group with three kids and two adults arrived 5 mins after us and waited a further 15 mins after our food came out.

The food was ok, but some of the food was way over done. The bread buns on the burgers where rock solid.

Whilst we where waiting for food, staff where collecting all the sauces, knives and forks from the tables.

Staff passes our table multiple times, even after food was delivered we where still waiting for knives and forks.

During the wait no one even asked us if we wanted another drink or asked if everything was OK. Once the food was delivered all staff where missing in action.

From what I have been told they have only recently started serving food again, usually when this happens services is spot on.

Serious work is needed on service, food quality and general organisation.

We visit pickering regularly and won't be...

Friendly pub with delicious home made food on the menu. Dog friendly and nice choice of lager and guest beers. Pie was full of well cooked and tender beef and onion gravy but a bit runny if poured onto plate but very tasty. Would have preferred to see shortcrust pastry instead of puffed but that's just a personal preference

One of the best meals I have ever had, if you are up for an affordable meal with high quality food this is the place for you. I really can not fault this pub from the dusty juke box allowing you to choose the music you want to listen to the delicious food. I do recommend dropping this place a visit.

Group of 5 plus a dog went on Good Friday all had lovely meals of steak pie, cod, Cajun chicken burger, gammon and lasagna with home made onion rings as a side. All clean plates. Would recommend. Also had a game of darts or too and one of pool upstairs in the games room.
