We have just returned from a very relaxing stay at this lovely coaching inn where nothing is too much trouble for the staff. As far as we're concerned they just about have got it right. Each morning we were served a beautiful freshly cooked breakfast with lots of options available and on the 1 evening that we ate in the restaurant we had a dinner which was again cooked and presented beautifully using locally sourced ingredients. Outside there is a covered seating area. we especially appreciated the garden area As explained on the website there are quite a few stairs which may cause a problem to some but for those that can, this hotel is well worth a stay. The reason for just 4 stars for our room, which was no:7, is because the room I think was above the bar area so we could hear banging and talking from below, however the bar closed at 10pm after which all was quiet therefore this was not an issue. More importantly the room as with the hotel on a whole was spotlessly clean with a comfy seating area and plenty of variety in the courtesy box. Our en-suite shower room was perfectly adequate for our needs. Pickering itself is a picturesque market town, everyone being extremely friendly and welcoming. Its location was an ideal base for us visiting Whitby, Saltburn-by -the Sea, Thorton-le-dale, Scarborough and Malton. It goes quiet of an evening but for us after busy days it's not too much of a bad thing.

My wife and I visited the Black Swan a couple years ago and were never really impressed with the place. Thankfully we were delighted with our recent visit where we enjoyed their lovely beer garden, which is well sheltered incase it rains. There is also seating adjacent which is open and you can enjoy the sunshine on a lovely afternoon. Also enjoyed the plants around the perimeter which makes for an ideal setting during the summer months. Tables are large so would fit a large party no problem. Drinks were a typical price for the area, maybe a little expensive if you're sat drinking there all night. Sadly they don't do Coors, however I enjoyed the Peroni on tap instead and my wife had a flavoured gin. She did ask if pink gin was available, however there was three other flavours which she opted for instead. Food is quite expensive and nothing seemed to appeal to me on the menu, sadly. There is a more formal dining area inside the pub, which also is a dog free zone and looks nice. I would love to see the place do some other bar snacks apart from crisps, however we did enjoy the bag of ready salted. Interior decor and bar area is lovely, there is even a small leather sofa which is very comfortable to sit on. Unfortunately I can't comment on the rooms as we were staying else where in Pickering.

Well my wife, sister & I visited Pickering on Sunday and the first pub we went into had stopped food & recommended the Black Swan. It has new owners & undergoing a refurb. So we ordered braised beef with veg puree (x2) and a pork tenderloin. Both came wig a large bowl of vegetables that we cooked perfectly, a thick wild mushroom sauce and the beef came with horseradish mash croquets. The pork a creamy mash. The owner was nice to chat to, the toilets spotless and the food was exceptional. It deserves 10 stars. Took a little time but cooked to order does. We got home made bread & butter and an additional potion (free) for mopping up the gravies. Nice low key music playing from ancient retro radios, comfotable couch seating and spaciously laid out tables. Very dog friendly too. This was far far better than we expected average 12 to 15 quid for the meals. Nice real ales on tap and 15 quid for a quality wine. A real pleasure in fab surroundings. Highly recommend. Thanks

All was well, until we had finally finished ordering our food and drink via the website from the very out of stock list of choice. We ordered two pizzas, chips and two soft drinks and chose to not have ice in either of these and a slice of lemon in one. They arrived, filled with ice and nothing else, tasted like watered down supermarket coke but oh well, not a big deal. Cutlery was brought to the table and we awaited our meal.

I received a text saying our food would be with us in 20 minutes. The couple next to us had put through their order around 5 minutes before us and they were greeted with their meal around 15 minutes later and we were the only two tables in there, this cannot be said for how many tables were elsewhere but high hopes were had.

I then received another text saying the food was ready on time and on its way, great! The time quickly came and went but no food. At one point, I considered taste testing the foliage on the windowsills to quench my hunger and boredom of the wait. As ten minutes passed I then got another text, thanking me for my order and I would receive it soon. This was then again followed by another saying how my food was ready, again, and on its way and would be with me in 10 minutes, however the time given was 10 minutes in the past, impressive! However, another 10 minutes later still no food. The two ketchup packets left on the table began to look very appetizing by themselves by this time; at least they would have more flavour than my drink.

Finally, a glimmer of hope, after 40 minutes our food appeared and was placed in front of us. My god, one look at the pepperoni pizza you would think they had popped to the local shop and pick up a pepperami, after the first bite this theory was confirmed. However, still tasted fine. Being so hungry, we continued to eat our meal. While undoing my cutlery and napkin, it became clear I had been given a fork and knife, but not any knife, a butter knife. Were the staff concerned due to our long wait I may have stabbed someone in a hunger-induced rage? This part I kid, its cutlery and mistakes happen and it gave us a laugh.

Overall, it was a long wait just for two pizzas and chips, no apology for the wait, the food and drink was subpar, very lacking menu of both food and drink as everything seemed to be out of stock. Maybe we caught you on an off day but I do not think we will be back.

Pros - Chips were great and the car...

A Wonderful hotel in pickering in a prime location near to all amenities. It’s close to buses on route via the Coastliner service leeds to Whitby and vice versa and very old quirky picturesque stone buildings, restaurants and shops. Also the church is just over the road. A short walk down the high st there is the North Yorkshire railway museum where you can see the beautiful steam engines coming into pickering and back out again to go to Whitby. We came from the West Midlands and originally booked for two nights that was extended to three nights. The staff went above and beyond for us in ensuring we had everything we needed and they are all very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very clean and well kept.House keeping is done daily and the hotel itself is old and beautiful with character features. The beds are comfortable and the rooms very spacious with beautiful bathrooms everything has been done to detail. We’ve stayed in a few hotels this year with house hunting and it’s the comfiest bed I’ve ever slept in and it was also quiet no noise from other rooms which we liked. The inclusive breakfast there is a menu with a choice of cooked breakfasts or cereals with toast fruit juice and tea/coffee all lovely and beautifully presented. But they cater to all dietary needs if you ask. Would recommend the full English it was Dee-lish.Prices for the drinks I thought were very good for being a hotel bar and the room rates are worth every penny. We’ve loved our stay here and just want to thank all the staff and the owners for everything you’ve done for us during our stay and we will be sad to have to go home tomorrow. If you are looking for a fantastic and beautiful place to stay I would highly recommend here. Comfortable, clean and value for money, gorgeous food and beautiful surroundings. You won’t be...
