Very famous and iconic destination for tea, cakes, scones and hot food. We were a group of nine but split up into a 5 and 4 table. It gets very busy and there is an orderly queue outside. You have to wait in line before being seated. I think we waited for about 25mins before being taken into our table. The lady keeping things in check was very organised and on point, hats off to her as youd have to be. Once in, the restaurant was warm, and it didn't feel cramped. It was very well organised, the service was excellent. We were seated, and I think we probably waited another 7ish minutes before our order was taken. It was quite a big restaurant with seating all round the back and sides and I think there was a mezzanine level as well. The food was good. I had the avocado and poached egg on sourdough bread which was delicious. Accompanied with a pot of earl grey. My mum wife and friend had a mix of croquet monsieur, scone and a slice of coffee cake. Nice ambience. We didn't feel rushed and had a pleasant relaxing meal. Good experience, not the cheapest but you have to come. There's also a shop to the right as you come in selling, tea, coffee, scones, biscuits and totee bags etc. Rather expensive but we left with a lovely tin of spiced tea. Good all round experience, if youre not the patient type and not in a rush, then this is the place to come. I would probably go back with my wife and try more of the cakes.

I booked for afternoon tea and I will start by saying DO BOOK! We got there and the queue to just enter without reservation was at least 10 people long and on the way out the queue had extended around the corner so I can't emphasise enough that booking will make the experience much smoother. We were seated in a beautiful dining room on the first floor with an immaculate presentation and an in-house pianist whilst you ate. Your menu is already on the table for you and as we booked ahead we let them know I was coeliac so they had already prepared a Gluten free menu for me on the table. The waiter we had was very attentive, as soon as I said I was coeliac he knew straight away what that meant for me and did advise me there may be a risk of cross contamination, as is the case eating anywhere when gluten free, but I appreciated the knowledge and clear communication! The afternoon tea was excellent, my gluten free options were almost identical to the 'regular' options so I felt fully included! The menu was also almost identical which was lovely. The place is naturally a little bit more on the pricey side but this is perfect for a treat which is exactly what it was for me and my husband. I would say it's not ideal for children or young kids under the age of 12 just because of the atmosphere and setting. There's no parking on site but there is parking a short walk away at the Jubilee car park.

Bettys Cafe Tearoom Bar is an institution. People come from far to experience the old fashioned service and excellent quality of their products. It is normal to see a long queue outside of people waiting for a table. As former York residents, we have visited Bettys in York many times and know what to expect. We were early yesterday and there were still a few empty tables. A very friendly lady with a warm smile "handed" us over to another lovely lady who showed us to our table. Our expectation of Bettys was already met. However, it soon went downhill. Within one minute after we had taken off our coats and sat down, a waitress came over and asked if we were ready to order. Her mannerism was anything but what we expect from Bettys. She was polite but nothing more. The best way to describe her would be "unfriendly and miserable". We told her that we need more time, then ordered tea, coffee, cakes. My second cup of coffee took at least 8 minutes to arrive. Whilst I drank my coffee, the waitress turned up, asked us if we wanted to order anything else and, when we said we didn't, she then immediately reappeared with the bill. She did mention the obligatory "No rush" of course. The way she handled it all didn't help. Outside was a queue. For a waitress to try to push clients out of a venue (on her own account or ordered) because people are waiting outside - in our case whilst I have not even finished my coffee - is out of order. She may have said "No rush" but it is just totally wrong. Beautiful Mocha coffee, beautiful cakes but still a bad taste...

My friend loves afternoon tea and we have been to Betty's in York last year. This year I wanted to show him some different places so I chose Harrogate (Mainly for Fountains Abbey).

We had to wait a few minutes as there was a short queue but the lady on duty was attentive and came out to provide menus early and the check on the number of people in each party.

When we got to our table it was clean with plenty of space around it (I hate when you are crammed in somewhere), we were sat in the main area near the windows, it was a little warm but tolerable.

We were served by the lovely Roberta, she was lovely and attentive making sure we had everything we needed.

We both had the Pink Champagne afternoon tea, the cost of the champagne is a little high but we were having a treat, they replaced my salmon sandwich (at my request) without issue and it felt like a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

The food was delicious and we spend a good hour and a half enjoying the atmosphere and the cakes.

The cakes are very rich, but this is balanced by the tea. It is a shame that there is only one blend of tea on offer but its was still delicious.

My only real criticism would be the cake selection, as it is the same as the Café in York and therefore hasn't changed recently, the tea room we go to in Manchester changes their cake selected every few months which makes it more likely you will go back because it will be a different experience but all in all a...
