Botham's of Whitby ~ Baxtergate Shop & Tea Room — Restaurant in England

The Skinner street Bothams Cafe is closed on Monday so we booked a table at the Baxtergate outlet as one of our party wanted soup (it's on the menu) and another wanted quiche (it's on the menu), so all good we arrived on time and sat down. My wife couldn't see the soup of the day so asked what it was only to be told that they didn't have any soup today, not a great start then so my mother in law asked if the quiche was quiche lorraine only to be told that they do not 'do' quiche on Mondays. I had to laugh as it seemed to be a bit like Fawlty Towers but on a serious note there was nothing on the menu or in the cafe to indicate that did not have these menu items which exacerbated the situation. Maybe we should have just shouted out 'What the heck have you got then?' at that point but we tried to find something else on the menu. To be fair the food that did arrive was ample and of good quality, but again, although two of us had platters these arrived with no Coleslaw (It was on the menu), we gave up trying as the staff could not cope with serving new customers and clearing the tables. I've given a three rating but could easily have been two but maybe they were just having an amateurish day. I called into this shop late morning today. I'm a 69-year-old man with significant mobility difficulties and was walking with 2 special NHS walking sticks. I barely through the door when I was asked what I would like. I explained my friend who would assist me was not through the door and we'd like to take a look first. I made it clear we had finished looking and attempted to engage with a member of staff, but she kept ignoring me despite being aware of this preferring to continue to chat to her 2 colleagues at the rear of the shop. My friend said to me she's talking and I replied to my friend it must be nice to get paid to talk. The other lady doing nothing and could have stepped in at any time scowled at me. Called Saturday June 21st 2025 for quick cuppa and nibbles having approached service point for cafe I was met with one female member of staff preparing coffee for waiting lady and her work colleague who having looked me up and down ignored me continuing to talk to her work mate several minutes passed I waited she turned around at last I thought service ! , not to be she again ignored me so I returned to the small cafe area picked up my bag and left . If this is how they treat customers I fear for their future, manners cost absolutely nothing and to be treated in such a dismissive manner I cannot in all honesty recommend this establishment, I for one will not darken their doors again, shockingly poor non service, I hope the proprietors read this and wring their hands in frustration it takes years to build a good reputation and...
