This 300 year old pub is situated on the A5 fairly close to market Square. We visited at 12pm for a spot of lunch and were shown to our table by Craig. We ordered our starters, garlic mushrooms and onion bhajis, turned up piping hot and were thoroughly enjoyed by us both. The mains... Both of our sirloin steaks were cooked to our requests, very nice and again both plates cleared. Dessert was 2 x chocolate brownie sundaes which did not touch the sides! For us what gives this lovely pub the full marks was the complete package.... The welcome, the old character and everyone in the pub spoke and smiled. Lindsey never stopped, bringing everyone's food out and did a lovely job whilst Craig chatted with everyone whilst pulling the pints. Fantastic couple and a huge credit to what they do. Our 3 courses with 2 pints of Pepsi max totalled £70 but due to a deal we knew nothing about it ended up costing £61. We visited another pub last weekend and paid nearly that for 2 main courses! Lovely atmosphere, gorgeous fireplace, pleasant staff, Lindsey and Craig.... Recommended! Visited 5th March 2025

Popped in for a quick lunch, good for what it is but not really my favourite. Himself had Hunter's chicken, I had Mac n Cheese. Both had the same synthetic tasting barbecue sauce. Apart from that, my salad was fresh, his chips were ok and it filled a gap. Garlic bread was only baked on one side and I think they'd thrown the garlic on from some distance away - you could barely taste it. I'd skip the machine made hot chocolate next time though - very sweet and disgusting when it gets cool.

This is a post dedicated to Sarah, the Head Chef, at the Brave Old Oak and the grand-daddy of the Fox Red Labrador, in Towcester.

Today, my foolish Chesapeake Bay Retriever, got himself stuck, in the mud, in the brook, between the Northampton Road and Old Tiffield Road. As the ever not so diligent Council, have elected not to cut the vegetation, close to the water, I could not see him. What if there was a child in question?

Sarah was out walking her gorgeous Border Collie, Milly and Mr ?, his son's Fox Red Retriever. Appreciating my distress, I had been calling Chicco, for at least 20 minutes, they did not hesitate to lend a hand. Without hesitation, both walked through the head high stinging nettles to try to locate Chicco. Sarah waded up to her shoulders to get hold of Chicco, then the gentleman helped them both out.

My relief was palpable and Sarah lives close to where I do, she walked back with me and offered me comfort. I was in tears, as you may imagine.

If you own a dog, Towcester is very good place to live. There are many, caring, dog owners and as Sarah remarked, you might not remember the name of the owner, but usually remember the name of the dog!

These two people have my grateful thanks. Needless to say, I won't be walking Chicco there...

Four Stars - A Charming and Historic Pub The Brave Old Oak in Towcester made for a pleasant Friday night visit. I was immediately drawn to the character of the building and its evident historical charm. The atmosphere was relaxed and fairly quiet, which suited me perfectly. The service at the bar was excellent. The bar lady was very polite and helpful, even pointing out a wine deal we wouldn't have otherwise known about, which we happily took advantage of. Drink prices were reasonable, and the quality of the drinks themselves was good. It's a sign of the times that last orders were around 11 pm, with closing up shortly thereafter. Gone are the days of lingering in pubs until late, but this is the norm now, and not a criticism of the Brave Old Oak specifically. My only minor issue was that I ordered a vodka and lemonade but received a vodka and soda. However, this was a small oversight, and I didn't let it detract from my overall enjoyment. The lovely old fireplace added to the cozy ambiance. All in all, I enjoyed my visit to the Brave Old Oak and would...
