After not being able to get a table here with my wife several months ago when we happened upon it on Wellingborough Rd, it was front of mind when, with a couple of friends, we wanted to grab some food somewhere.
We almost couldn't get a table again as the long but narrow dining area was once again full. We decided to have a drink at the small bar first as a table was likley to leave soon. Only small complaint here would be that as friendly as the staff were, we had to make a point of checking if a table would become free rather than be asked if we'd like to wait as a table would be become free soon.
On a Thursday night it was great to see Northampton with a bustling ambience. The food was fairly creative with the tender and very pink calf's liver the stand out dish. The food is a range of mainly locally sourced ingredients made into various small tapas style plates with a twist, however more typical tapas such as whitebait and prawns with garlic connected the "British Tapas" menu to it's Spanish ancestry.
A contrsuctive critiscm would be that the garlic mushroom dish used the same garlic and oil sauce as the garlic prawns, which itself was overpowering and meant the 2 dished tasted the same. Other than than that it was almost faultless. Fillet of beef was one of the most tender and succulent cuts of meat I've eaten in a while. And I'm fussy!
Wine menu was small and, in part, predictably fashionable (1x Rioja, 1x Malbec, 1x Pinot Noir) but we plucked for a red wine from an unknown French chateau called Langlois, which the menu noted belonged to the Bollinger family, the logic being this should hopefully mean QA would be high. It didn't dissapoint, this Saumer wine was very enjoyable, aromatic with a fairly long finish. It balanced the food well and its inclusion showed some thought had gone into creating the wine list. Without this bottle the wine list would have been a little cliché, but with its inclusion it was short but thoughtfully sourced. Without tasting the other wines, they went up in my estimation. Even if they were predictably the supermarkets top selling wine types of last year, perhaps they were particularly fine Malbecs or Riojas!
The wine was further helped by it being served at the absolute perfect temperature.
A very enjoyable, impromptu evening. I would recommend others try the Bread and Pullet. They've attempted to bring something different and creative to the Northampton restaurant scene, which is crying out for it.
They've succeeded in tackling any aspiring restaurateur's challenge - how to appeal to existing market tastes and expectations i.e. making it accessible, whilst also introducing something new and trying to elevate. In this, the Bread and Pullet has done a brilliant job as a crossover that meets the needs of Northampton's clientele which is vital in ensuring its success, whilst also raising the bar a little. The place is deserving of your visit and it's...
Read moreNot what I was expecting. Nothing fresh apart from the salad. First we had the pork scratchings. These were out of a packet. The same kind you find hanging from the shelves in the booze isle of any shop. The other starter we tried was the marmite and cheese flat bread. That was nice. After I had the blue cheese balls. Cooked from frozen. One was still cold on the inside. They were Luke warm. Also blatantly out of a packet but tasted nice. I also tried the scotch egg. That was nice. The chips are not made on site. Just your average 'from frozen' supermarket chips. The melted Brie was ok. Just a whole brie melted in a dish. The fried lamb was...odd. Again you can tell it wasn't prepared on site. Do you see the trend here?
All packet food served in small dishes and overpriced.
The worst but was the deserts. We ordered 3 different ones. Presented in a jar, pot and on a plate. The pot had a shop bought cerial bar sitting on top of a dollop of ice cream mixed with rice crispies, some more rice crispies and another cerial bar at the bottom of the jar.
The 'crumble' was fruit in a dish with porridge oats sprinkled on top.
Altogether a disappointing experience, I ate my fill but it was all overpriced freezer food that was rushed. Between 4 of us we spent 125 pounds for a glorified microwave meal then were asked to leave a few minutes after we had paid because they needed the table.
Won't go again, wouldn't recommend it and there is no way the star rating on...
Read moreWe stopped in Northampton after 2 weeks out on the boat and having eaten happily at B&P before Covid, booked in on a hot Thursday evening. Arriving, we were surprised to find it empty, but enjoyed the aircon to ourselves The drinks were excellent(locally sourced gin), and the food superb and cooked to perfection. The curried Bhaji scotch egg is a brilliant twist, garlic mushrooms to die for, braised steak full of flavour and the lamb skewers something else!! Oak smoked salmon and Dirty Fries were sublime and the blue cheese rarebit filled any gap remaining. Service was obviously very good, with us being the only ones in, apparently Fri and Sat are packed, midweek is empty. Come on folks, get out and support your local treasures and enjoy safe and...
