While solace can be found in the soft light and cobbled streets of south Cornwall, life’s rich tapestry often demands that even the most tranquil landscapes are ruptured, and deep chasms are pitted in the pleasantries of the matching sea and sky. Such was my experience at the Cornish bakery. The customer service was akin to spilt ink on my quaint Fowey postcard. From the outside, the bakery is charming; occupying the corner of the street and painted a sweet pastel blue. But as Shakespeare’s Elsinore has taught us, appearance and reality can be vastly different. Like Theseus confronting the Minotaur of the labyrinth, I was greeted with a vicious scowl by the cashier. While initially giving her the benefit of the doubt, her attitude soon surpassed my capacity to be understanding. Indeed her sullen, miserable rudeness befitted that of a sinner on Judgement Day, and this gentle Sunday afternoon in Cornwall held no trace of fire and brimstone. Never before has ordering a simple pasty and coffee resembled a humiliation ritual, but my encounter with this cashier left me feeling belittled, ashamed and humiliated. Insult comes to injury when I remember that I was paying her to do her job! And so a deep scar runs across what would have been the perfect afternoon. I would encourage this employee to consider the impact of her rudeness on others. As tales of old have often taught, where kindness is, so too is magic. The Cornish Bakery lacked...
Read moreBecky and her team are so lovely, built up a good rapport with a good few of the team who have been there a while and it seems the same can be said for a good amount of the locals too. Always got a smile on and are happy to help recommend new food options, help with any allergen and dietary information myself or people with or around me have had to ask. There's always loads of different flavoured pasties, with veggie and vegan options too which is great. Inside is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by while you have a bite to eat and a drink. Takeaway is also an option offered, as are bundle/bulk buy options which is great if you have a small party or something going on. All in all a great place with a great team, totally worth a visit (a cracking...
Read moreMy family, 4 adults and 2 children, have holidayed in Fowey 4 years on the trot. This is the first port of call for a great coffee and pasties or croissant after a 5 hour drive. And the last call before we drive back home. We call in here nearly every day for a coffee and a snack. My favourite pastie is the vegetable one, I’m not a vegetarian, it’s because they are nice and spicey. They serve sausage baps along with bacon baps in the morning till they are sold out. The rest of the meals are always first class. The staff are very friendly, and the premises are always clean. There is extra seating upstairs with one toilet. I thoroughly recommend Cornish Bakery for quick...
