What a great little place. We called in Sunday night (Aug 21), for a glass or 2 of wine (only to find out we'd just missed a wine tasting evening. Gutted). It was just like being back in Italy. Busy, friendly, welcoming and noisy with chatter. A superb atmosphere. We sat in the corner by the window soaking it all in and sipping wonderful wine. I don't even know what the wine was, just the house red, but it was perfect and we stayed till it closed. The next morning we walked past again and this time couldn't resist calling in for a coffee. The staff seemed to recognise us and greeted us with a familiar smile. It was much quieter, but it still had a busy hum about it. We ordered two coffees, sat inside, chatted and watched the staff work with a relaxed precision and attention to detail as they prepared and served the food and drink. This time I ventured in to the rear of the shop where there was small intimate lounge area with comfy sofas and tastefull arty pictures and decor. A stair case took me down to where the loo is and where, partitioned off by a glass wall and door, is the barbers shop. It's small, but fully equipped and a large bearded barber was busy at work. The loo, which was my reason being there, is unisex and was very clean. As I returned to my coffee, which by the way was excellent, I paused and imagined being back in Italy. Its that kind of place. Coffee finished, we left Coviellos and left Durham, but I'd drive all the way back just to visit this authentic little...
Read moreStepping into Coviello, I immediately felt that warm, authentic Italian welcome that promises a memorable meal. This isn’t one of those overwhelming, tourist-trap menus—it’s blessedly manageable and clearly focuses on quality over quantity. That is a philosophy I can absolutely get behind. The magic here, I’m told, comes from Danieli, an expat Neapolitan, and his exquisite cuisine truly lives up to his exacting standards. Every plate that left the open kitchen was a thing of beauty, a testament to his craftsmanship. I started with a primo course that was simply lovely: a delicious melanzane and a an order of Italian meatballs. Yum!
For the main, an amazing Mortodella and pistachio pizza, my choice was equally beautifully prepared, demonstrating a wonderful balance of rustic tradition and refined execution. It felt like food that had travelled straight from a family kitchen in Emilia-Romagna to my table in Durham, and I adored the unpretentious perfection of it all. Honestly, I felt that I was back in Bologna 🤪, not in Durham!
Beyond the food, I was impressed by the great wine list. It was thoughtfully curated, featuring excellent regional Italian bottles that pair perfectly with the menu. Danieli offered an insightful recommendation that complemented my meal without overpowering it. Coviello is a genuine culinary gem—a place where passion for Italian food and drink shines through in...
