Been meaning to visit for months, unfortunately on the previous attempt we found it shut.... turns out that the previous landlord had moved on.
This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, Brown Ales Pub Company has took over and massively invested in the place.
Judging by previous pictures the changes have been hugely beneficial, it's got a similar feel to a London pub (without the London prices) modern but warm and inviting, the garden has also had a massive revamp, it's got two sections, an undercover non smoking side and an enlarged open air side that's fully surrounded by glass.....it's also one of the hottest places I've ever been in the summer...and I've been to Egypt and Morocco!
The beer range seems to have also improved, they still have a few lagers on alongside a couple of traditional cask ales; however, there's now an excellent range of craft beer from the likes of Pentrich, Black Iris, Shiny, Polly's, Deya etc alongside modern cask from Two by Two, Pentrich, Bang the Elephant, Full Circle etc.
Full meals have gone, replaced by quality snacks such as Scotch Eggs, pork pie, cheese boards, olives etc, in my opinion it's definitely the way forward.
They've recently (May 2023) started limited tap takeovers/beer festivals with external food trucks in the garden.
The GM and staff seem to understand current drinking preferences, what makes a beer and a decent pub... which is awesome.
Alongside the Furnace and Flowerpot this side of Derby is absolutely...
Read moreStaff are really nice BUT we have visited twice in last 2 weeks. For drinks only. Our first visit was an evening visit and we walked in, sat at a table as there was plenty of tables available and the wait/bar staff was all round the bar so expected to be served quickly but waited about 10 minutes then we had to grab their attention as they gathered around the bar for several drinks to be served. Then another 10 mins to receive our drinks. We expect things to be slower but 20 minutes is a long time to exist for a drink when it wasn't that busy. Then again today we ordered our drinks quite promptly but then sat 17 minutes waiting for our 2 drinks to be served. To be told "we are busy and the Carling had to be changed but oh, you guys haven't got Carling" we ordered 2 pints of citra. Again, we expect things to be different but we had observed how busy they really wasn't, whilst we waited. We was the only customers plus a table after us (who ordered e Carling's and was served within 10 mins) It's really disappointing as we have only ever had really good service before as regulars and Can't fault the drinks or food bit more this system is clearly not working and has put us...

Visited recently with friends in the evening and had a very disappointing experience. We were refused alcohol after my friend, who has dyspraxia, accidentally knocked into a plant pot in the outdoor seating area. The pot had been placed awkwardly in the walkway between chairs and tables that had been pushed out, making it hard to navigate.
Up until this point, the barman had been happy to take our money, but as soon as this minor accident happened, he referred to licensing laws and claimed my friend was drunk. This was absolutely not the case — my friend was completely sober, and the incident happened purely because of his coordination difficulties.
Rather than taking a moment to understand the situation or even moving the obstacle that caused it, the staff chose to make assumptions and refuse service without any consideration or empathy. This felt discriminatory and unprofessional, and it put a real damper on what was meant to be a relaxed evening with friends.
Not the welcoming or understanding atmosphere we expected, and sadly we won’t...
