I used to visit about 7 years ago and had fond memories of the place. My other half has since hassled me to return but kids and weekend clubs have got in the way. Today was a rare Friday off and I thought what an opportunity to pay an old favourite a visit. Place still looked the same and we walked in with excitement this time bringing our two children with us having me raved on about it all morning. On arrival we searched for our coffee loyalty cards but the cards were all mixed up so I gave up, however I was excited enough to just order. The two baristas were polite and we sat and waited for our food. I ordered the sausage and egg and my partner the cheese and egg sandwich. Children picked a croissant and cinnamon swirl and we all had hot drinks with an added cinnamon bun. It filled up two small tables. My sausages were a little overcooked on the “chewy side”, however bread was lovely and egg yoke oozey as I like it. During our meal the lady owner came over to ask if we were expecting anyone else. She was insinuating we were taking up too much space, although I wasn’t sure how else we were supposed to fit across one small square table. When we finished I ordered a sourdough and chocolate honeycomb tart to takeaway. While I waited I had another search of my loyalty card to which the lady owner sharply pointed out it was only for coffees (which I had ordered 2 earlier). I politely assured her I was aware and was just trying to find my old card, hinting my nostalgia from my previous visits. I felt a coldness in her response so I took the letter “B” category out of the holder box to search out of her way. She then offered me my takeaway bag despite my hands full as if to hurry me along. I took the bag l, thanked her and placed it down on nearby table. She then exclaimed “no wonder these cards are all out of order you’ve taken them out of the box”. By now I’d felt unwelcome enough, despite spending a small fortune on breakfast than the average place, the whole experience was tarred with the impatience and passive rudeness of the lady owner. It’s such a shame as I was so excited to go down memory lane but left feeling that I never wanted to return. I will eat my sourdough this week with a bit more...
Read moreWe visited Magee Street Bakery for the very first time this morning and were a little disappointed with how the lady with glasses spoke to us on two separate occasions.
There is no signage on the door or outside to stipulate how many people are allowed inside the cafe. Small cafes like Yellow Bourbon where we visit regularly states right outside the door, how many people are allowed inside. No matter, we waited patiently outside.
When we eventually went inside, we ordered coffees and bread. I turned to my husband and asked “would you like a sausage roll for lunch?” The lady, with glasses interrupted our conversation to state “there’s NONE left.” When I then pointed to the glass cabinet and enquired what were the pastry items were…as to us they looked like sausage rolls!
The member of staff then stated “they’re vegan sausage rolls or halloumi”. As we are vegetarians.. and spotted the signage on the glass stating they were vegan/halloumi.
We didn’t need the interruption and curt nature of someone who was very keen to close the cafe to be pedantic about the items. Instead a simple “Sorry to interrupt you both, the items we have now have left are, our vegan/vegetarian sausage rolls.”
It was a first visit, and we’ll be voting with our feet by...
