Fantastic place to meet, eat, and drink — day or night.
Great range of beers, a well-stocked bar, and their food is really good. The staff are all very friendly and the service usually quite speedy.
The reason I'm docking a star is because, on our last visit, we were a little bit put off by the sight of one of the cooks (dude on the end of the kitchen preparing the veg, chopping avocado etc) repeatedly licking his fingers clean while handling food that would eventually end up on plates. I'll definitely go back to the Micklegate Social because they do tasty grub and this is a genuinely nice place to hang out, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on who's cooking my breakfasts...
PS: Message to the owners: please, please bring back the old veggie cooked breakfast. It was great. The price suddenly went up by about two quid a few months ago, but the sausages got swapped...
Read moreI've been to the Micklegate social a number of times to attend the open mic and have been sorely disappointed at how many times the open mic nights on Saturdays have been canceled. I think whomever is handling the events portion of the establishment does not really care so much about promoting the event regardless.
The open mic is held in the basement underneath and though it gives off the impression of a post modern jazz lounge, the sound system is fairly outdated and there is the occasional pops and cracks.
Location wise, its a little far off from the city centre so you're looking at about 15-20 minutes walk from York Minster, so thats a minus point for me.
Drinks wise, there's not much to say. Its bar, they have all sorts so pick you favourite and you should be good to go. Other than that, I won't be coming back here...
Read moreMy favourite bar in York for watching football. Close to the bar walls, part of the Micklegate run. Loads of screens and some of the cheapest prices in town - £2.60 John Smiths. Usually difficult to get a seat though and can get rammed for big matches. Lots of standing room and very blokey. They don't do food either. Smoking area/beer garden out the back.
You can reserve a booth with its own telly to watch a game (holds maybe 6) but you have to pay an upfront fee which I think is £50. You get that knocked off your bar bill so it's like paying upfront which is a good idea but you'd have to have a few numbers and stay for longer than the game otherwise you'll struggle to drink that much as the prices are so low....
