The Southern gateway of York's historic city walls, Micklegate bar is the first that many visitors to the city will likely come across due to it's proximity to the train station.
It makes a fine first impression. Standing proudly at the end of the boulevard like Blossom St, the Bar acts as a boundary between contemporary and olde time York.
Outside of the gates there is a Premier Inn and a Wetherspoons. Walk inside you are quickly met with the cobbled streets of Micklegate and much older sleeping and drinking establishments.
The bar itself has a museum in it but I heard this is closing soon. Hopefully it gets replaced by a betting shop, vape shop, or American candy store 🙏🤞.

Read moreIf you are thinking of taking the Jorvik pass for all linked attraction's then this is the one that will disappoint. It's new since COVID and on the website the distinction between the pass and the guilded walk's was rubbish. Micklegate bar does does give access to an original gatehouse which in itself is worth seeing just don't expect what you get from the other Jorvik pass experience's. It is two small Room's with a TV showing a videos made with employees from Jorvik. That is not a bad thing as the show is well made and we met a couple of the actor's while visiting the other attractions. Read moreGreat pit stop with lots of information about the wall of York. We had a bit of trouble finding it, but take heart and head up the stairs on the wall and you'll find the entrance, exhibits and gift shop.
There's a staff member at the top that was a wealth of information and answered all of our parties questions. The stairs are steep, so if you have mobility issues, be ready. Castles and the like aren't ADA accessible.
The quality of exhibits are great with lots of views of the surrounding area. I really enjoyed the video of actors describing different times of the Gate, and the diarama on the second floor really helps to make an impression on how big the gate was.
