Visited the priory yesterday after just getting off the train, ordered a violet gin and a fever tree tonic. Amy who served me was very friendly and helpful as I asked her which tonic she recommended for the gin I had chosen. I went to sit down and as I went to pour the tonic into the glass I noticed the glass was cracked a good way down and had a big chip out of the top I immediately took it back I, had to wait a good while as they were busy unfortunately Amy didn't come to serve me instead it was the most arrogant, rude man i have ever encountered. I handed him the glass and a shard of glass that had fallen out of the rim of the glass whilst I was waiting. He immediately smelt at the contents looked at me with utter contempt and said "why have you only just brought this back now when there is only this bit left" at which point I told him I had only just bought it and it was only a single gin which I hadn't put any tonic in yet he responded by saying how do I know that I didn't serve you so I replied no you didn't that girl did pointing to Amy he then accused me of breaking the glass myself at which point I really lost my rag. He stormed into the back and clearly threw the glass at something as I heard it smash he returned to the bar and started to pour me another gin as he did so I went back to my table to get the full bottle of tonic to prove to this vile man that I hadn't touched my drink at all well this really rattled him, he then asked if I would like money back to which I replied yes I would as my friend had had a pint so I would have had another but I'm not going to now, his very professional response was "I couldn't care less ". He slammed my money down on the bar but I then had to sit in a very uncomfortable atmosphere whilst my friend finished her drink. Never in my life have I been treated in such an appalling manner. People like this vile man shouldn't have a job dealing with the public. Unfortunately I didn't get his name but you would recognise him, short, fat, shaven head with a massive chip in his shoulder and an attitude problem more befitting to a 16 year old. Needless to say we won't be...
Read moreGreat food and beer, shame about the Juke box!
When we went in it seemed nice and quiet. We decided to stay. I waited about 10 minutes at the bar and I was about to leave but the barsteward came back. Apparently he was having trouble changing a barrel of Larger and in all fairness he still was. he went back down to the celler but a few moments latter after another failure of the pump to deliver anything drinkable he took a break to serve my drinks, no problem.
I asked to open a tab and he retained the card which I must admit I have never had before and I was not comfortable with. We ordered our meal and I settled the account cash so that I got my card back.
My wife ordered Cod and chips and I ordered Wholetail scampi. Unfortunatly whilst waiting for the meal to arrive the juke box was turned up to a volume that I considered to be uncomfortable and not in keeping with a pub serving food to a wide range of age groups.
I do feel this is a shame as the food was really very good but I was not able to relax and enjoy it. The beer too was also good and I do believe that even the larger was brought under control eventually.
Pubs really need to keep in mind that not everyone will want to be force fed music at a level that precludes comfortable conversasion especially when the music is so dire. I am aware that some people want a noisy pub with loud music but not at 17:30 and not when you are advertising family meals. Please make a choice, the food is really very good, the beer is more than acceptable and I feel sure that the pub will actually be more popular if the music is kept at a level that is not uncomfortable to all but a 17 year old. If it had been that loud when I opened the door I would...
Read moreAttempted to visit for my mums birthday. Guy at the door “greeted” me with a look up and down, rude tone of voice, and immediately asked if we were the same household (5 of us - Mum, dad, brother just left uni and me and my partner who are back home whilst our house is been built), the place was at about 50% capacity, the guy on the door turned and looked at a colleague and said back to me “no sorry only doing tables of 4”. Meanwhile there were many tables of 6 men, 6 girls etc, who were quite clearly not from the same household. We pointed these out and sniggered “they’re two tables of 3” with a smirk. Quite clearly a locals only place. Would have understood if he would have said “sorry guys we can’t accommodate you”, as there is a way of handling things and customer service level that should still be kept even during these testing times. Very rude staff and as York locals will be avoiding at all costs and telling friends and family to do so too. Plenty of better...
