The North Eastern Railway War Memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, and unveiled in 1924, to commemorate the employees of the North Eastern Railway who were killed in the First World War. The passage of time, pollution, and the weather, have not been kind to the memorial and, sadly, it is showing its age. It’s likely harsh cleaning and re-engraving would deteriorate the once grand memorial further. It’s reassuring to see that those employees, whose names are carved into the memorial, have not been forgotten as new panels have been installed to preserve the names of those lost. This is an interesting memorial to visit are reflect on the sacrifices made by so many.

A fitting memorial to the employees of the railway who lost their lives in conflict, situated a short walk from the railway station. The stone has become heavily weathered over time, but the memorial still has a genuine presence.

A poignant reminder to the sacrifice of some for the many. Note a smaller memorial to BR staff member and British Transport Police officer killed in the York blitz in 1942.
