Immaculately clean and welcoming pub just that little further off the tourist trail but truly worth seeking out. The beer is well kept. Terrace on the front. Go find this gem. UPDATE: 28.08.24. Another visit and I've added the well deserved 5th star because this place is faultless! We sat outside as the weather was glorious. The staff here know what they're doing and told us to find a seat and they would take our order. Not only that, when it was obvious we were nearing the end of our drinks, they politely asked if we would like another. And of course, we did. (I cannot understand why other bars and pubs don't do this.) The Theakston Old Peculier (I had two) was superb, the company of others was great and once again, the whole experience was absolutely spot on. Well done, Tavern!!👌👏👏🍻🍺

Went here hoping for a hobbit style interior or at least something wizard-y or enchanting. Literally nothing to do with Tolkien or Middle Earth at all, apart from the Gollum sign outside. The jarring disappointment made the interior feel even more bland and charmless than it already was. Broken TV playing pop music to boot. Told to sit down and our orders will be taken from the table. No menu or wine list appeared so we asked for a cocktail from the sign above the bar, just an Aperol Spritz - "no, we don't do those." I see a Coke Zero sign above the window so ask for one. "No sorry, we've got diet Coke?" I settled for soda water. Positives - clean, efficient.

I had high hopes for this place going in. As an avid Lord of the Rings fan I was more than thrilled to see Gollum on the sign. I went in and had half. The pub is dog friendly and has great views of the harbour. It also has an outdoor seating area. Inside, they provide table service. There is a pool table and darts board. We had to sit with another couple which was weird. They were nice. The pub was playing music videos on the TV. They were rather loud. If you like Lord of the rings, this isn't the place for you. If you are after quick drink and a community feel this is the place to be.

Lovely place and drinks however extremely bad manored landlady or manager

My partner went to the toilet, I was sat at my table the land lady (I assume she was as she didn't have uniform on like the other staff) came over took the chair my partner had for another table so I said 'thats our chair its being used'

She slammed it back down and glared at me and said in a very rude manor 'actually it's my chair' It took my dad and me about ages to get over her rudeness as we were having a lovely time in the sun before this happened .

We just could not belive her bad attitude. To have a job in hospitality being hospitable is a must.

We had just baught our second round of drinks so it was clear there was a 3rd person at our table. Plus 3 other drinks nearly empty on the table. Its common sense to look on a table first before even asking for the spare chair. Let alone just snatching it.

We did not stay for the 3rd round as we love the place but dont support bad manors.

Shame as if you dont get on the wrong side of the land lady it's a beautiful pub.

Also the way she spoke down to her young staff was awful they were all so lovely and she was just mean like a Sargent major

Typical case of when a job is going to someones head totally lost in her ego

This land lady could do with...

The pub was bought out by new owners. The Lord of the Rings Reference now has nothing to do with what the pub is. Weirdly they want to seat and then bring your drink to you rather than just you taking your drink from the bar.

They aren't very open to the Folk singers and the annual folk feastival, and have a disdain for them. The one staff member seemed to have disdain for people overall... Why run or work in a pub?

It feels like the pub was bought out by owners from London that want to bring the big city to the North East.

The chap was friendly enough to talk to. But definitely doesn't understand what Northern UK pubs are about.

Just more southern gentrification and loss of traditional and regional culture.

Goes without saying that it was definitely a quiet atmosphere, and plenty of seats available for you to be seated whilst your pint is brought to you.

If you're a bit of a soft wuss and don't like genuine pubs, drink with your little finger in the air, and are scared of humanity. Then this is the pub for you.

A Middle Earth Tavern it is not. More what a pub would be like if Sauron ran one: Empty and just for him.

Far better pubs in Whitby, this one no longer fits the vibe of what otherwise is a very lively and quirky English...

I have never ever experienced customer service like this in my whole 18 years. As i work in customer service myself i know exactly what’s expected. I walked in last night Saturday 13th july, and there were 3 teenage girls serving behind the bar around half 6, i’d say a similar age to myself and i immediately felt uncomfortable as soon as i walked by, as soon as i sat down they started whispering to each other and looking over at me and giggling through out the shift. It was an extremely unwelcoming experience as they were making it extremely obvious they were speaking about me in a not very nice manner. As soon as i sat down i didn’t even want to order a drink because i was that disgusted with the experience i had and didn’t want to provide and money for the pub with bar staff like that, so my family ordered before they were aware of what had happened and as soon as they were made aware by seeing it for themselves they had their drink and left as soon as possible. Will never ever return to this bar which is a real shame because it’s a beautiful place just a shame the bar staff are...
