Service:
We were greeted by a chap named Russell when we came in, he was friendly and energetic. I had a question about the available fish which he was able to answer very quickly and clearly. He seemed more than happy to take a moment to help and was very professional.
We were served by a young lad who took our order. He was friendly enough but a little quiet and reserved. However he was also clearly new. I'd never mark down service when someone was obviously new to a job or in training. He was smartly dressed and did his best which is all anyone could ask for. Zero complains there!
Food/Drink: One slight complaint would be the drinks menu is rather limited. My Scottish companion was disappointed at the lack of Iron Bru and I would of liked more options in the way of juices or other healthy options.
The food was lovely, we had ordered both fish and sausage so we could sample both and both were excellent. The chips were great too! I would have liked a side of garden peas but only mushy peas were an option (eww) in the end I got curry sauce which was nice. The portion sizes felt about right for average hunger, offering a large fish and decent number of chips (two Jumbo sausages for adult portion) but if you were really, really hungry it wouldn't be enough. We ordered the regular portion, there was a size above this but I did feel that was rather expensive, although as we didn't see the actual size we can't comment on it's value.
Prices:
Following on from what was just said, we felt the prices competitive and about what I would expect for fish, The adult sausage order actually being very good value for money. Drinks were one pound for cans of pop which is in line with basically everywhere else.
General positives and negatives:
Despite being at perhaps 70% capacity, it wasn't loud in there which was nice. It was easy to have quiet and pleasant conversation without feeling drowned out by other tables.
The area was very clean in the areas you'd expect but needs attention in the less obvious spots such as tops of skirting boards and wall art.
There's bits of broken boat on the walls! That's cool. The overall design choices inside where actually well thought out. The restaurant is full of character yet retained a mostly neutral overall pallet. Quite impressive.
Our one and only real complaint. :-( Food is served on a plate topped with a piece of paper. I couldn't see exactly what it was but it looked like some sort of novelty print with the appearance of a news paper. I'm not sure what it was for, maybe to keep the food warm longer or protect the plate? It could be a purely aesthetic choice? It was charming I suppose but the reality is, this sort of food is quite greasy as one might expect and we found the paper would break under the cutlery and then bits would to stick to our food which meant we didn't actually eat everything because of this. Next time we return we'll be insisting on no paper base on the plate as we felt that really did spoil it for us. It is for this and only this reason we rated food down from 5 stars to 4 as we didn't feel we could finish it despite wanting to.
In closing:
I think Naked Fish is a great place, it's great food, nice staff and overall a pleasant place to eat. We'll certainly be back even if a couple of small things where not exactly what we wanted, the rest more than makes up for it.
Big thank you...
Read moreOh, my Cod! This has got to be my favourite fish and chips when in Yorkshire. I'm hooked. Best fish and chips in Yorkshire, second to none imho. It has a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff, great sea views and delicious food. Reasonably priced also.
Lovely Plaice to visit after a nice walk on the beach or around the town. Take a perch and watch the world go by as you dive into a generous portion of a freshly cooked local delicacy.
You can tell they care about sourcing and using only fresh produce. Not only that but ensuring the customers are content, happy and full.
The times I have visited, the food has always been cooked to order so you know it will be good as you eagerly wait with a watering mouth. Well worth the wait and I much prefer this to those that choose to cook en-masse when it's busy - resulting in a sorry-looking neglected welp of a thing, unlovingly chucked into a box or put on a plate to get as many people through the door.
It is clear that The Naked Fish only use pristine oil in the fryers and this gives the batter the perfect consistency, texture and flavour to complement the flaky goodness of the North Sea fish. The quintessential British treat when at the seaside.
Being a huge fan of fish and chips it is not just about the actual dish. It is the whole experience that ignites a nostalgia for me of a simpler time as a child when I did not have a job, mortgage or any responsibilities. Just the simple enjoyment of a sunny day trip to the beach with family. It is the papery rustle of the chips, the exquisite explosive crunch of the crisp batter, the little puff of steam biting into that fillet of cod or haddock that escapes as you break through the batter for the first time, the slippery flakes of delectable white fish slipping between your fingers and into your mouth, the tang of the vinegar, the rasp the of salt, the gloss of fat on the lips. Utterly heavenly.
If I was Shellfish I would keep this place a secret but that is not fair. I cannot recommend The Naked Fish in Bridlington...

The guy cooking the fish (presumably the owner or manager?) gave us a cheerful welcome and directed us to the back for the seating and mentioned the 2-4-£15 deal (more of that later)
The seating is picnic bench style so was a little cramped but we managed to fit in ok as a 5some
They didn’t have formal menus to hand out, but everything was written out on a board. They do a number of options as a 2 for £15 option on a few options, including the “small” fish. So we ordered 2 small fish and 2 regular fish, and some extra chips for my daughter. We also got some sides: gravy, peas and curry sauce. And 4 cups of tea.
I was slightly concerned that the tea comes ready made, so when I ordered I asked for it to be made strong. Luckily it was a very nice cuppa! (I’m not sure what’s going on but there seems to be a trend for fish places NOT to give you pots of tea anymore??!! I do think you need a pot when you have fish n chips)
The food arrived and looked fabulous. The small fish were actually quite big, and the regular were really quite big! (They do bigger options, but really unless you know you are really hungry I’d go no bigger than regular!). It was all piping hot and tasted lovely. I’m quite particular about my curry sauce, and like the main food, this was very nice too.
If we’re out in Bridlington again we’ll definitely revisit this...
