Okra is a long standing Indian restaurant in Derby, competing with a lot of rivals in the city and surrounding areas. I believe Okra has maintained its authentic standard for a while, hence revisiting last night, unfortunately its standards I felt had slept a little. Okra is located in a perfect central point in Derby with ample parking and car parks near by. It stands proud and can’t be missed. Once you enter, you get a great feeling, a great authentic Indian vibe with great decor. In comparison to new restaurants all heading down the ‘plantation’ route. Our table was booked for 18:30. Our food was served at 19:50. The starters and popadoms are brilliant. Very nice! The level of alcohol and mixers are great with no dilution taking place. The food menu is good, with some good options, however I felt either the presentation could be enhanced and/or there could be foods added to this. The portion sizes are reasonable am to be fair, however could be topped up just a little. The rice portion as are generous. After speaking to my friends, the chicken was hard and the ‘Korma’ and ‘Madras’ dishes weren’t to expectation. Sadly, Okra has slipped a little but not to the point they can’t bounce back. The waiters are all very friendly and smartly dressed, displaying a warm welcome. On average we all spent around £35/40. A nice place, a good option but there are better competitors out there overtaking Okra currently. As a Google reviewer in the top ten percent of restaurants and eateries, I can confidently say this. I hope to see Okra bounce back. Thank you for the...
Read moreI've been going to this place for the past three years as it never fails to disappoint. I'm not usually a fan of Indian restaurants but Okra is so authentic I love going back. The food is excellent and the staff are extremely polite and welcoming. I'd highly recommend this place for anyone wanting a genuinely good curry.
Edit - My last visit here was a bit of a mixed bag so I've marked it down. I attended with my family, and my sons had ordered Kormas. When the food was bought out the waiter placed the food in front of them and said "There's nothing wrong with a korma, nothing at all", which was quite patronising considering we'd already ordered the food so obviously didn't think there was anything wrong with a korma. The same waiter also grazed his sleeve on poppadoms that were on the table, a MASSIVE no-no in my eyes with any food.
I'd also ordered the Okra Lamb for myself. I was asked "how spicy would you like it" to which I normally respond "desi" meaning how it's traditionally supposed to be cooked, but then was asked "How hot as in vindaloo? Madras?" and what I ended up with was a lamb madras with okra, which isn't really something I wanted nor was it something I would order. So it was an okay meal marred by a few small (but noticable)...
Read moreOne of the best curry restaurants that I have visited. This is a far more 'fine dining' experience than you normally receive in a curry restaurant. I was a solo business traveller for an over night stop in Derby. There is plenty of space around the tables for discrete conversation, the waiting staff were excellent and were able to provide me with a great recommendation based on my taste. I had two poppadoms with chutneys served in chinaware, rather than the normal pressed steel. Then I had a delicious lamb curry, rice and a naan. I had two large glasses of merlot which were reasonably priced at £5 each. The meal came to £40 for one person. The restaurant is located near the theatres and centrally to the city, it is also just along the road from the popular Fat Cafe if you are looking for a follow on location. It took me only 10 minutes to walk from the also excellent Leonardo Hotel and the 'UKs safest carpark' if you are driving. I can't recommend highly enough, definitely worthy...
