Updated review July 25:
I've been here several times since my last review, for a time aside from the peas I was always very happy. However something changed at some point resulting in everything tasting strongly of oil despite not being overly greasy, this resulted in me deciding not return for a while to see if anything changed.
I visited again one evening last week and was very disappointed, the peas remained bland but no surprises there, however the chips were also dry and had clearly been sat for a while.
Portion sizes were down which is perhaps unavoidable with the increased cost of ingredients, but the biggest problem was that once again all I could taste was the oil.
I don't know whether they are using a different type of oil since my first glowing review or whether it is being changed less frequently but it's unpalatable for me.
If I had access to the salt and vinegar then I could have perhaps masked it with this but the staff control it, which is in my opinion sacrilege in a chippy given we all have different seasoning preferences.
There's also far too much signage in the shop with print outs adorning every available space on the counter.
I don't see me returning any time soon.

Read moreVisited Pocklington today and we were having trouble getting some lunch. Queues at all the cafes and Cooplands, it was looking bleak, then we clocked this chippy. I had seen it before but we had never ventured in. The wife took no convincing and so we skipped over the road drawn by the wafting smells of chips and haddock.
Well, oh my word, what a choice! I ordered fish, chips and peas and the wife had cheesy chips, and the whole lot of morsels were a sympathy to our tastebuds, a feast of pure joy, a taste sensation. We have lived by the coast for many years and this was the greatest fish and chips from memory. I can't remember having better! Great value and two lovely ladies giving immense customer service. It greatly improved what was already a nice afternoon out, thank you so much, we shall be back. How dare you tempt us in this way and thank...
Read moreIn short, our food was cold and this could've been avoided... we don't often get fish and chips, this was my second visit to Railway Street Fisheries and whilst you could see the staff were doing their best to serve everyone, the lady serving me dished up my chips literally as the fish were going in. I didn't want to say anything (as hoped they weren't mine!), but sure enough fish was served and chips (in a box) were added. Hoping she knew how long they'd stay warm for I departed for home (only 5 minutes away) and the chips were absolutely stone cold, my husband asked what had happened! Such a shame as we only get fish and chips maybe once every six months and this was a real disappointment. Will try...
