Making a visit here we were greeted by a very pleasant barman who welcomed us and showed us to a table. The pub itself is a typical city pub. It has a nice area to the front of the pub to sit. This is next to the road and a 4 way traffic light system but still quite pleasant. There is a bear garden to the rear but this was closed so we did not get to see this. It’s clean and has some nice little quirky features. I ordered steak and ale pie, mash and veg. My other half ordered a satay chicken kebab. We ordered a drink and the wait time from making an order to the meals being put on the table was just over 40 minutes. It felt a lot longer. Whilst sat waiting 3 different sets of people came in with dogs and were allowed to sit with dogs in the dining area. This I was not impressed with what’s so ever as I could smell the dog sat only 3-4 foot away from me. Come on people are eating food and dogs just sit there. At one point 2 dogs both quite big were facing off to each other barking like mad at each other. I was surprised at this is allowed to happen let alone allowing the dogs into the area of people eating. The food, well I have to say the food despite a long wait was out of this world. The meat in my steak and ale pie was so tender and tasty. The mash so smooth and creamy and the veg delicious. The gravy was rich and really really good. Clearly the long wait was due to the food being cooked so freshly and after eating commented to my other half it was worth the wait. It’s just such a shame that the dogs spoiled our visit as the food was out of this world.

Our first time trying the Rose and Crown since it was taken over (again). We were all very impressed. Two of us had starters - haggis Scotch eggs, with salad and smoked salmon with beetroot. The mains were chicken, sage and ham hock potato cake; halibut with prawns; sausage with apple mash; burger and chips; and kids ham and cheese pasta. All of it was high quality food, beautifully cooked, including veg with a little crunch. Even the kids pasta tasted home made, not a packet sauce. Worth also saying the halibut should have been with chorizo but when asked for the dish without it, the waitress suggested the alternative, which impressed us. Not cheap but pretty typical gastropub/restaurant prices. Good value for the quality of food, service and environment. Hoping this owner can be the one to finally make a go of this pub.

I can always find something healthy on the menu and usually order a cup of soup and a bowl of veggies. They make their own broths and sparingly use only wholesome sweeteners like turbinado sugar. The down side is that they also do a great job with the tempting fried foods. At most places fish and chips are not worth the calories, but check out the gigantic size of these square cut potato fries. The mushroom ketchup, mint sauce, and tartar sauce are all house made. The gin and tonic was made with a sugar free fruit mix that consisted only of fresh squeezed blood oranges, fruit chunks, cardamom, and bitters. The tonic water was sweetened with fructose or agave (I prefer the stevia sweetened tonics, but the fructose is a huge step up from corn syrup). It is hard to find healthy pub food, but this place is great.

We attended a function after Beverley Races (5/7) in the evening. Approximately 43 people had some super food in the upstairs function room. Some of us got there earlier than the 7pm start time. Downstairs the staff behind the Bar were welcoming, and organised, ready for the large amount of footfall that went to the Pub after the races. People were served quickly and the drinks were tip top and reasonably priced👌 Upstairs the Starters, Mains and Desserts were served in a timely way, again this highlighted the excellent processes and procedures in place, ensuring everyone, enjoyed their food. The food; Steak Pie, Curry, Lasagne, Salmon etc were generous in portion size, but for me and many of us, the quality of the ingredients shone through, fabulous tasting food, well cooked 😋 👏 I wouldn't hesitate in holding a function at the Rose & Crown. A fantastic, well run establishment, which deserves to be very successful going forward. Thank you to everyone involved, on what was a very busy day for you - you...

We arrived at 7.15 and informed the staff that we had booked a table for 7.30 in the restaurant. At 7.35 we were seated in the bar, which we accepted in good grace. At around 8pm a pleasant young lady who seemed to be the only one taking orders took our order and starters arrived about 25 minutes later. By which time we'd ordered 2 bottles of wine at 24 pounds each.. probably worth about a fiver at best. We were still waiting for mains at 9.10 by which time we'd lost our appetite and decided we weren't going to wait any longer. We paid for what we'd had and left. All in all a very bad experience.. the little food we had was average, the mains hadn't arrived after 1 and a half hours and the guy who dealt with what we felt was a very justified complaint was ignorant and defensive. If you want a nice meal in nice surroundings at value for money, avoid this 'pub'. What an absolute shambles. Totally shambolic and well...
