I had a very warm welcome from Sheila the licensee and that is a key element to any pub's success.
It was an introduction to a most delightful pub so full of interest and character. Claiming to be oldest pub left in one of the oldest parts of Bournemouth, it was interesting to see the Victorian maps which revealed the origin of the pub's name, as prior to the arrival of the railway it looked out across a cricket ground - now long gone under railway lines and old sidings.
The bar area displayed an interesting array of memorabilia and alcoholic temptations including some interesting real ales. Definitely a pub to visit .... and while away a pleasant few hours in good company! Yes...
Read moreAn old school classic pub. These are hard to come by these days due to the smoking ban being enforced a number of years ago. The smoking ban caused alot of pubs to fail as no-one wanted to stand outside in the cold 90percent of the year to smoke. The owners have done well to hold onto there pub and make it work, alot of pubs chose to do food to make more profit when the ban kicked in. Read moreProbably one of the last real local pubs in the South. Shelia keeps the cask ales perfectly, has a good selection of red wine and is an attentive host. The music is always good (both background and live), and it is comfortable both at the bar and in the raised area of the old boxing ring saloon with plenty of comfortable seating. There is also a snooker bar and outside seating, facing West. People actually talk to each other and roasts are served on Sundays only.
