The Downgate Pub — Restaurant in England

We recently retired and moved to Hungerford. We have been spending time checking out the many pubs/eateries in the town. Last Sunday 19 September we booked Sunday lunch at The Downgate where their previous chef has recently returned. Five star food. Five star service. Five star everything. Delicious partridge. Excellent roast beef. The roast potatoes are to die for. Proper strong coffee! We spent two hours in the pretty, covered Courtyard relaxing with our little puppy who also received alot of attention from the friendly staff. THANK YOU ALL AT THE WONDERFUL DOWNGATE! Had a pleasant evening and a reasonable meal. My starter was a little disappointing. Better than I would have expected when we walked in but didn't live up to the promise. My main, ribs, was much better than I expected when I first saw it and my colleagues steak looked great and was cooked as rare as he asked for.

So why 4 stars not 5 given the staff were friendly and attentive? Well the kitchen was clearly having problems, wrong starter for us and problems for another table. But that was all sorted with no problem. Fundamentally it is the price. We had better elsewhere in the town at that...

Had a lovely meal for 3 at The Downgate. From entering, it was welcoming, staff and locals that were in were lovely, friendly and chatty. Great choice of meals, chargrilled steak, scampi and curry went down a treat. A well proportioned meal as well. As for the puddings.. well what a choice!!
