We booked a meal prior to a festival event at the nearby Booth Museum. We received a confirmation email. When we arrived at the pub the restaurant was closed for a few weeks. None had bothered to contact us. The lady behind the bar said we could get a takeaway and bring it in. We ordered at the Chinese next door and brought a total of 5 drinks from the bar. When I asked for plates and cutlery, we were told we could eat out of the take out cartons and cutlery was provided. So instead of a nice meal prior to an evening’s entertainment, we sat in the pub and ate a take away out of foil cartons, staring at the doors of the closed kitchen, with all its plates unavailable to us. What a strange way to treat paying customers. And just now we have received an email saying they may charge us £30 for a no show! You couldn’t make this up!

Really unforgivably bad...

So my family and I used to live in this pub in the 90s when it was “The Dyke Tavern” and was the first place I remembered calling home before we moved away to Devon. Came back over the weekend for a belated 30th birthday celebration and felt so happy to be able to step foot inside my old home again! I know the place has shut down and re-opened as all sorts and I’m sad to see my old beer garden and the right hand side of the pub has now been taken over by other business but I guess that’s a sign of the times and I’m grateful that some piece of the pub is still open! The food was absolutely to die for, the burgers were nothing short of gorgeous and the bar/wait staff were super friendly and approachable! The prices were super affordable and surprising for the service and meals we received!

Keep up the good work everyone! Thank you for...

Absolutely loved it here! Happy helpful friendly staff. Perfectly chilled wine. Amazing roasts! Beautifully prepared, incredible flavours. We are pretty fussy when it comes to a roast out! This ticked all boxes, plus some we hadn’t even thought of! We had the three roast - beef, lamb and belly pork with additional sides of pigs and cauliflower cheese. All cooked to perfection. Wish we’d taken photos, but we were ravenous from all the delicious aromas coming from the kitchen! The Yorkshire is divine and like nothing we have tasted before. Fab roasties, delicious butternut purée and the cabbage had incredible flavours too. Loved the apricot stuffing, red cabbage and enormous roasted carrot. I’ve no doubt forgotten the other gems on the plate. But we will return to remember them next time! Definitely an experience not...

The Dyke Alehouse Brighton was saved from the brink of extinction in a two-year campaign of committed community resistance and crowdfunding, which even got the support of Caroline Lucas... I think this pub has certainly played to its strengths as a food destination rather than a hang out for drinkers. The layout feels very much orientated and purpose built around fitting in as many diners as possible. And there has been some inevitable sacrifice of comfort and personal space with no sofas or cosy nooks to relax into. Full visit writeup is available on my blogsite

It's a nice little pub which is quite hidden. I had two beers and both were very well kept and had appropriate glassware (love that!). The selection was good for keg beers (I adore the Abyss super pale) and even though they only had one cask beer, it's a good local beer (Longman brewery). It is quite expensive, but that's par for the course in the area. The staff were lovely. The atmosphere was nice. Pretty chilled. Would recommend.

A fantastic little pub that is undergoing lots of exciting changes at the moment. The new bear kitchen serves wonderful food and a fantastic roast. His classic 'Bear Burger' is an absolute triumph. There is a very fun quiz every Tuesday night that is always a great laugh. The bar staff are friendly and the atmosphere is comforting. I highly recommend this charming pub in Brighton.
