Came for a Friday lunch, on the recommendation of CAMRA's pub of the year. Bustling but not crowded, with a mix of lunchtime and afternoon regulars as well as us visitors. The thatched pub is just off the high street but feels like a local, with a few parking spaces right out the front. The front bar includes a couple of nice nooks and a wood fire, and there's a back room for larger groups as well as a patio that must be perfect in warmer weather. There's no facilities for disabled toilets or baby-changing.
The real ale was obviously going to be great: there's half a dozen casks, and as many taps including lagers and ciders as well as craft beer. The staff were very warm, and helpful with recommendations and tastings.
The menu is pretty compact but includes soup and sandwiches, as well as specialising in burgers---vegetarian options were not an afterthought, and the brie and mushroom burger was as good as you'll get.

Read moreI imagine this place is fantastic for evening drinks or meals but tea and cake is definitely not to be recommended! We were informed that ' only one cake' was available- lemon drizzle. It sounded great so we ordered two teas and two slices of cake at £5 each. So far so good. It was not lemon drizzle cake but plain madeira with lemon juice squirted thereon. But the worst part of all was that the big teapot ( probably for three) contained only one teabag and thus just hot water. I tried to attract he who acted like the head man to ask for another teabag but he never looked in our direction. We chose the wrong place as it was Wed afternoon and The Dandelion nearby was closed ...but the barman couldn't have been...
Read moreThis is a very friendly traditional pub, much favoured by residents of Royal Wootton Bassett. It's position just off the high street, near the town's famous old town hall which is raised up on pillars, is one of continuity with local history - you can count on it to provid you with a traditional English pub experience. They have just updated their menu, this caters for all tastes, old and new and those with food allergies. They have an excellent choice of drinks, from cider, beer, spirits to a variety of modern coffees. Parking is not a problem, there is a large council car park available just around the corner outside the Sainsbury's supermarket, which is just a 5 minutes walk away, or you maybe lucky to find a free space on the street. Recommend a visit, for a drink or a meal. Am sure you'll receive a warm...
