I recently attended a wake for my cousin at The Fox on the Downs, and I was genuinely impressed with how the staff handled everything during such a difficult time. The service was excellentāattentive but not intrusiveāand the food was good, exactly what was needed for the occasion.
The pub has a truly welcoming and genuine charm. It feels like a proper local, with a comforting atmosphere that my family and I appreciated. It was a perfect place for us to gather and remember my cousin.
My only minor complaints were about the drinks. I was disappointed to find no real ale on tap, which feels like a shame for a pub with such character. I was also a bit taken aback by the price of a soda water, as I was charged the same price as I would have been for a full pint of draft Coke. I didn't expect it to be free, but it felt disproportionately expensive, especially since soda water is a by-product of the soda gun and I expected it to be much cheaper.
