Staff at this hotel were brilliant. Very friendly and informative and couldn't do enough to help, however there were a few things that let it down and why the rating is low. I must start by saying we only stayed here for one night, it was only ever going to be a place to sleep and eat after a 3 hour journey, before a visit to longleat the following day and then a return journey home. We arrived at 7.30pm just as a quiz night was starting, music was very loud and I could hardly hear the poor lady trying to check us in. There was a very limited car park at the hotel which was full already, but we were told to park in the pay and display car park a short walk away from the hotel which was free from 6pm-9am, it felt safe enough but did mean that we had to be up and out before 9am and either leave then or pay for the car park. Luckily we only had an overnight bag so came back and made our way through the maze of stairs and corridors up to our room. We were in room 3 which is built around a flight of stairs which leads to more rooms. It was quite noisy with guests going up to bed and also at 5.30am with someone coming down! The room itself looked nice and had everything we needed, the bed was clean and had fresh linen and towels. There was a big tv (we didn't use) and tea and coffee station which was well stocked and had mugs (very welcome) and a bottle of fresh drinking water too. Some of the paintwork was peeling in the bedroom and the bathroom which gave it a bit of a shabby feel and the carpet was a bit grubby and had a random dog treat hiding under the bedside table. The double bed had a decent mattress but was very firm, too firm for us, so we had an awful night with not much sleep. There was a fan in the room which was a nice addition. The bathroom was clean and had a good supplies of toiletries, but the shower head holder was broken and it didn't have much pressure which wasn't great. Because of the car park situation we had to get up and out earlier than planned. Longleat didn't open until 10am so we planned to leave the hotel at 9.45 but left an hour earlier which added pressure to the morning as we didn't want to get a ticket! When we arrived I thought I was told that they stopped serving food at 8.30 but we went straight up to drop our bag off and then came back down for food. As we arrived on a Sunday it was a Sunday menu which was quite a bit more than the weekday menu I had found online. I hadn't factored that in and it was very centred around a roast dinner. We opted for ham egg and chips which was simple and was nice, but at 8.10 the menus were collected as the lady said they had stopped serving now! I really wanted a bannoffee waffle which I had seen when I looked before so I abandoned my meal and went to the bar to see if I could order a dessert, after checking with the kitchen she said it was fine, which I was very grateful for, and went back to my dinner. Dessert arrived and to be honest was a bit disappointing. My husband had a raspberry and white chocolate roulade which which he said was nice but was a tiny portion considering it was about £7 and my waffle was also nice but covered with squirty cream which was almost evaporated by the time I ate it. Staff didn't put any pressure on us for time, but I felt that we were a bit of a pain arriving 'late' for ordering food, so I felt under pressure to hurry up and eat. Our food altogether with two lime and sodas was £48 which felt a lot for what we had and didn't feel that we could just take our time and enjoy it. Breakfast was lovely, there was a good selection of cereal, yoghurt, fruit and fruit juice, warm croissants, tea, coffee and a good hot food menu too. It was all delicious and staff were really lovely and helpful. We were just very tired from a bad night sleep and having to get up and out with a time limit rather than the relaxed morning that we had hoped for. It is a good location, and the staff were all, without exception lovely and helpful. Just be aware of timings and that you will probably have to park in a public car park.

Updated.. 4 nights stay June 2025 As I still can't add a 'new' review. We are frequent guests staying between 3 & 5 days, often twice a year. Why do we keep returning?? ... It's the most welcoming of places with staff sooo friendly & helpful. We do have a "preffered" room but on the rare occasion of it not being available, have stayed in others. The rooms are always spotlessly clean & Housekeeping - who work tirelessly behind the scenes - make your stay very comfortable. The breakfast - which is included - consists of a great variety of hot & cold options, all freshly cooked & the Staff are extremely diligent to any dietary needs. The Hotel is 'old' & 'quirky' which adds to it's charm. Recently the downstairs Bar & Restaurant areas have been revamped with a slightly more modern edge but this hasn't taken away the historic feel. The new extended Beer Garden is definitely a plus, allowing you to relax in the late afternoon/evening sun. We love it !! Updated ... Friday Dec 2nd to Mon Dec 4th 2022 As I can't seem to do a new review I'm adding to my last & it's still 5 stars ⭐ would give more if able. Just had our 3rd 3 night stay for this year !! Absolutely love this Hotel ❤ had our preferred room which was immaculately clean as always, all Staff are friendly, welcoming & hard working. Plenty of choices for Breakfast & Pub evening meals are delicious 😋 We did note the extra choices on the menu this time. Always something to do, whether you take in the local markets or take the bus into Bath (we always have a bus trip into Bath) or just explore the surrounding streets. Already booked our next stay. Just had our second 3 night stay. Love it here! All the staff are hard working, really friendly and helpful. Big variations in sizes of rooms/ensuites!! We could only have our preferred room for 2 nights this time so had to change for the 3rd, it was located at the very top, lots of stairs and corridors, much smaller than we're used to, dual aspect front and side windows which was nice .. but.. the ensuite !! It wasn't much bigger than a double wardrobe, hubby is 6' 2" & bumped his head several times going in or out, he also found the shower cubicle quite challenging. Myself only being 5', could fit in OK, but couldn't reach the heated towel rail situated on the wall above the toilet. Drying yourself had to be done with the door open, I have a bruised elbow to show, for trying with the door shut. However, as always the rooms were immaculately clean with an outstanding complimentary beverage tray and the Housekeeping team are fabulous !! The breakfasts are delicious with plenty of variety for all, a basic 'Pub' evening menu but again, good sized portions and delicious 😋. It's a great location, markets on your doorstep, brilliant little cinema just around the corner and a bus stop opposite, we took the bus into Bath for the day. There is a small underground carpark at the back of the Hotel, bit of a knack to get in & out of, might struggle with a large 4x4, we have an estate which is low but long and manage fine. Watch out for the pigeons !! A comfortable and quirky Hotel ... Already planning our next stay ... not in room 7 though 😁

The hotel was cheap and it served its purpose. The staff were nice and the food in the restaurant was nice enough. The hotel layout itself was quite labyrinthian, going up and down stairs, and down winding corridors to find our room. Some of the door frames were very very low, like around 5’5”, inside and outside the room. The bedroom was dated, no aircon other than a small fan they provided. The shower was horrible and the water drained so slowly that I had to turn it off halfway through so not to flood the bathroom. The shower was also extremely small and uncomfortable to use. As you can see from my attached photos, the bathroom walls were also stained/marked with dark patches that looked a lot like mold, and some of the painting was also peeling off. The bedroom windows were also very dated and let a lot of sound in from the noisy street below. The booking.com page listed free parking, there is a small on-site car park that requires a code from reception to unlock a padlock to access. However this car park was full when we arrived and throughout our entire stay, so we couldn’t use it - I think the booking.com listing shouldn’t advertise ‘free parking’ if it cannot accommodate at least one car per room. Overall it was a disappointing stay, but it was fairly cheap so I didn’t go in with the highest expectations, and we didn’t spend too much time in the rooms. But the bathrooms were especially unpleasant.

Stayed here one night as my family were going to longleat day after. Staff weren’t very helpful nor friendly. Definitely not a child friendly hotel. Prices for drinks and food were absolutely ridiculous for what you get! There was an issue with one of the rooms which we were advised by email. When we got there and charged for 3 rooms at original price even though the one had now been downgraded. So had to specifically ask if there was a price change otherwise we would have continued to pay for a room we were receiving. And let’s be honest it wasn’t a cheap night stay for 3 rooms so it was the most they could do and even then it was like we were in wrong for asking so. Staff very blunt and love to weirdly stare which did get very annoying and uncomfortable as the evening went on. Food was absolutely terrible for the price. We only ordered for the children as they were very hungry. Menu was very limited. Order pizza for my children, I asked if a children’s portion of chips was available to order which I had a straight No, so I ordered the side portion of the main menu. For the children’s pizzas to arrive with chips on the side and side portion was estimate around 8chips! Which I paid £4.25 for and £6 each for children’s meals. It was just a shambles ! Thankfully us adults didn’t eat here as from looking around portions we very small and there definitely wasn’t an over thrill of people eating. Very noisy and slightly warm and dated in the bedrooms, we were located on the top floor understanding it a small hotel pub there was no lifts, however help from staff with luggage was joked about and that’s it. Good thing we were only there for the night and packed lightly. Above us must have been the private residence as they then decided it would be a great idea to start hoovering at 11:30pm at night when we are trying to sleep, very noisy and definitely not considerate at all. Worst nights sleep ever! Breakfast wasn’t very hopeful again greeted by stares constantly from staff members. Also as group of 6 adults and 3 children it was my daughters birthday so as you can expect some celebration ect however we were still very quiet and kept ourselves to ourselves. And to be honest just could wait to leave.
