This is a tricky one. As a pub it's a great place. A super range of beers and a very sympathetic restoration of a classic pub, but with an individual modern twist. The convertible outside seating area is excellent. The staff is great and it's very dog friendly.

We didn't go expecting to eat. If we had this would have been a much more positive review, but the menu was very tempting.

We ordered two pizzas and beer and cheese hush puppies - apparently an American savoury doughnut.

The first issue was that the food took a 90 minutes to arrive (ordered at 16.50 on Saturday). The other issues were with the food.

The hush puppies were nothing like savoury doughnuts, more like compressed wholemeal bread with any hint of flavour removed. No discernable trace of cheese.

The pizzas, though cooked in a wood fired pizza oven were tough and lacking in flavour. I suspect they were cooked earlier and either kept warm or reheated when the dense bread balls were fully compressed. The Hawaiian tasted more like cheese on toast than pizza. I like cheese on toast, but not at nearly £15. The other meat one was tough, but ok. No evidence of the promised Stilton.

We told the staff and they did refund the £10 for the compressed wholemeal balls. They wouldn't refund on the pizza as we had eaten half. We were rather hungry after waiting an hour and a half.

All in all, very disappointing. I'd go back for a drink, but certainly won't bother with...

We went in for drinks after a curry knowing the place was open until 10. We had one round while the quiz was on. The place seemed lively and well staffed.

The quiz had finished and we went to the bar for another drink but were told last orders had been called. We asked when that had happened and told at 9.55 (it was 9.57) but they had no bell so didn’t let any of the customers know.

That’s not last call for orders. If you don’t have a bell let the tables know individually or use your voice to let people know - you even have the luxury of a quiz man on the mic. Rather than apologise for a lack of communication- the manager on the bar Jess became incredibly defensive about the situation and seemed to double down on her reasoning being the right way of running the bar. She made a comment to someone else on the bar ‘she couldn’t wait to go home’, which only made us feel more uncomfortable.

Another table spoke to us disappointed about the situation and said they would have had another drink if they were aware. We were in the bar until 20 past so I wouldn’t consider it a ‘hard’ close with staff putting chairs on the tables etc. so we could have easily drank our last order drinks in time.

Overall really disappointed - in the hospitality industry where people are struggling you shouldn’t turn down trade and provide a consistent service from the time you open to the...

We hired the function room for my Fathers wake...for up-to 100 people! In brief as I could go on forever; the food was disgusting and presented like it had been dumped on to serving plates, the chips were greasy and uneatable, they had 1 member of staff on, the gas for the alcohol pumps all ran out half way through the afternoon leaving the party having to purchase bottled beer, they then ran out of soft drinks for children and hot drinks for the older guests! The room was a complete mess half way through as empty beer and wine glasses were left all over the room as well as half finished food on plates all over the tables! When complaining about the whole distressing afternoon after just burying my father, the managing director was both rude and threatening, and when I mentioned I would like to contact the Derby Evening Telegraph he replied that he would do the family with slander and that he knew the manager of the Telegraph so it wouldn’t be reported on!!! We did feel very sorry for the staff on and feel they were let down by their so called ‘managing director’ Save your money and go else where!!! I’m aware they will now reply with excuses....but over 60 of our guests will report the...

Kind of on the fringes of the city, but still easy to find as it's on the main road. A bit of a hidden gem, the outside looks fairly modern but quite small. However is actually fairly large with possibly one of the best beer gardens in the city. The garden is all season with a retractable roof, lighting and decent heating, it's basically another indoor room during the winter. However when the suns out it's a proper sun trap. The drinks available are all the usual suspects plus DBC real ales, DBC crafted on keg and a decent range of craft cans and bottles from UK, European and American breweries. It's not as all encompassing as Suds & Soda or The Furnace but it's a solid effort and far better than most pubs in Derby. The food is excellent with an emphasis on burgers and smoked/BBQ stuff, the dirty fries are excellent, but be warned that the firecracker chicken ones will make you sweat. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed with a broad age range of customers and a mix of individuals, couples, small groups and larger parties. Worth the walk from the city centre.

Update February 2023: Nothing much has changed, this time I ate there. Had the the burger with pulled beef with triple-cooked fries. It was very good, which adds to my recommendation. The number of cask ales is solid: 4 handpumps on the front bar 3 to the back (Different ones, apparently), all well kept. Staff was very nice, too. Original review: Excellent real ale pub on Friar Gate: Fine selection of non-standard hand pumped ales, all well kept. Recommended: Dashingly Dark from the Derby Brewing Company. Friendly staff, great community atmosphere, not too loud. Quite comfy, too. Kept in great shape. Definitely worth a look for a Derby pub crawl, even if it's a short walk from the city centre.
