Hello we visited this pub and wished we had been earlier as I loved it we went once during the day and had crab sandwich YUM YUM. Also a really funny experience happened wile we were there we had been talking about the pub and how old it was and asked a question about any possible ghostly experiences recorded there, we was told by the a member of staff about an encounter someone had there while closed and setting up the tables for the next day for serving about a encounter of someone brushing past this member of staff and how this person decided he wasn't going to set tables up of a night anymore because of this and while me and my partner were sitting next to the main door a figure came to the door dressed as a monk full kit pocked his head in the door way giggled turned and rushed off both me and my partner were amazed at this and went back to the bar and told the bar man I think he must of thought we was off our heads and to be fare I had to look at my beer glass and try to remember how many beers id had. LOL not kidding my partner was amazed at this as well we are defo going back there for sure the best few pints I have ever had great old pub went the same evening and they had a singer on that was very good as well we went 01 October to 5th October great place check it out. And if you paid someone to dress up and do that then great idea we found that so strange but very entertaining. Andy and Annette from Pontefract west Yorkshire...

Outstanding sanctuary in a town that is deffo pretty in places but definitely can ‘seem’ full of weatherspoons and seemingly people desperately seeking sky sports and the cheapest pint of carling black label - but this perfect little gem of a place, fantastic food, great ale, live music - it’s like the front door leads you into a different world/time.. Deffo recommended it here - I cannot stress this highly enough - it’s a perfect solid ‘100 out of 5’ Great selection of ales. Try the jail ale. Follow your Google maps, the place is set a little way back from the road and is easily missable but it’s so worth finding.. we spent 2 nights here the first was a live music, chatting to locals and 7 pint of ale type of night - it was so much fun; the second night we had the most beautiful trio of fresh fish meal in the restaurant - so light, tasty, fresh - stunningly delightful. I could have eaten the meal twice! The pub it’s self is ancient / steeped in history / low beamed ceilings. Did I say… try the jail ale. Absolutely stunning - I cannot stress enough ‘if you come to Torquay’ - you simply cannot miss...

Went here two nights ago as recommended by our B&B owner. We had to wait an hour and twenty minutes for fish and chips and scampi, no apologies or explanation as to why it took so long. When my partner bit into his fish there was a small hard stick which luckily he detected straightaway. We told the waitress who got the manager who was apologetic but then the chef came out and her only response was "it'll add to the flavour", laughed then walked off, it was disgusting and even the manager said how poor her customer service skills were. We did get some discount but when we paid the bill, we were due £6 in change but instead of bringing this over, the waitress shouted in front of everyone, asking whether we wanted it, how humiliating, of course we wanted it as we certainly weren't leaving a tip. Had a child or elderly person eaten that fish and swallowed the stick, it could have been an incredibly serious situation. We certainly won't go there again and our B&B owner will no longer recommend it...

Hidden up a side street just a stone's throw from the old Debenham store. It's my sort of traditional real ale pub which I guess gives away my age. Even if this is not your thing it is still worth a look to take in the history. Check out the stone flag floor. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, suggesting a try before you buy given the number of ales on offer. There's a nice looking restaurant at the back which I wish I had an opportunity to try. On our visit we were fortunate enough to be entertained by an excellent local singer/guitarist. It's relatively small so perhaps could get a bit cosy.

SUNDAY LUNCH.... It's more like 3.8/5, not quite a 4. The Sunday lunch was good, but I could definitely of eaten more of it, they don't really fill the plate up much. Roast potatoes were good, you get a separate plate of sweet cabbage for some random reason. Beef was nice, it's the thinly sliced type. Would I eat a Sunday roast here again? Yes, I would, although not before trying some other places in Torquay first. Very pleasant staff....old fashioned-type pub, very cosy, right by the harbor. I can imagine this would be a lovely place in the winter, when it's dark and cold outside!!
