Basically s mix of contrasts between very good and not so great.
Lovely decor inside. Privileged enough to be sat by an open fire. Staff very friendly. Like we see in most restaurants, always served fast on arrival, but kept waiting for the dessert menu and the bill after the meal.
I had fish and chips which was £15. Fish a chips is usually a cheapish meal so it's a little pricey for fish and chips, but there were indicators ticked that it was worth paying the extra. Melt in the mouth fish which tasted fresh, not frozen, along with attractive presentation and a lovely atmosphere in which to eat it.
However it was let down by the other half of the meal, the chips. When I emptied them onto the plate they bounced on the ceramic like pellets. Before eating them I knew they were dry, and dry they were! I suggested they had been fried twice, but my partner who works in a kitchen suggested frozen chips were used. These not so nice but convenient chips came also with my partners lamb vege and gravey. A meal which would have done better with mashed potato.
I had overindulgenced on ice cream the previous day, and noticed many of the desserts came with ice cream, so I ordered the apple crumble which came with homemade custard Instead. It was a very well executed dessert and tasted excellent but it still came with a scoop of ice cream, and only an itzy bitzy little minijug of custard. It would have been good to have been able to taste more of the homemade custard. To be fair the flavours were so well balanced it didn't need a lot of custard, but the lack of it was a little mean.
The restaurant was very busy and I noticed the some of the staff were trying to avoid eye contact so they could get on with their work. One lady saw I was looking at her (I was trying to get her attention) and she just smiled rather than asked if I needed anything. It took a long time to get served for a refill (drink) and to have our plates taken away. This however is a common problem in many restaurants and I realise its a struggle to make a business work. I hope though, after seeing this review, the restaurant will improve on its poor quality chips as chips are very cheap and relatively fast to make. I know many places are guilty of using frozen chips, but I would have hoped a place like...
Read moreMy wife and I have visited The Royle many times over the past year and we are really impressed by the quality of the food and standard of service. .
The Royle is located in the High Street on the corner of Church Street , opposite Lloyd's Bank. Long term parking by The Royle is not easy as the parking bays on the High Street are all limited to 40 minutes ( similarly the parking round St Leonards Church) . So my advice would be to park in the car park behind Bridgnorth Hospital or behind Whitburn Street. They are both owned and operated by the same company and you pay in one of the sheltered stations before you exit .It is then a 5 minute walk to The Royle with a slight incline up to the High Street.
We last visited on lunchtime Wednesday 29 March 2023 . Do be aware that The Royle does take bookings all week for eating as it is deservedly popular.
We had a lovely table upstairs and we do admire the staff who must make hundreds of journeys up and down the steps to deliver food and drinks to customers.
There is a specials board on the wall ,with a few extra meals in addition to the main menu. I had a Slow Cooked Pork , Bacon & Sage Pie with vegetables from the specials board whilst my wife had a Fillet Steak with mushrooms , onion rings , tomato and vegetables . Both meals were very good and tasty with a lovely fruity brown sauce as one of the accompanying sauces on the dish .We were really pleased with main course so left it at that this time .
On previous visits we have had a dessert. My wife had a brioche bread and butter pudding with ice cream whilst I had a sticky toffee pudding . Both were equally delightful and we had the opportunity to recommend the desserts to another table as we left !
Based upon our experience we would recommend The Royle as a place for a relaxing meal...
Read moreIt’s been a while since we visited Bridgnorth and we had our sites set on @theroylebridgnorth, a traditional public house set in a grade 2 listed building at the centre of the high street.
⭐️5/5 Recommended👍🏻 Price 💸💸
The creaky floors, original features and open fire place create a cosy drinking and dining atmosphere, just what we needed.
Oh my god repeatedly came from my mouth as I tasted the bread and butter dipped in smoky haddock, rich cheese sauce with crunchy gratin topping. The Royle take on haddock smokies really took me back, the perfect starter. Nostalgic comfort food like this reminds you that simplicity should never be disregarded.
The black pudding scotch egg was exactly what any lover of these balls of gold would hope for, deliciously runny, meaty and an absolute winner.
You are spoilt for choice between the lunch menu, main menu and specials board, certainly something for everyone’s taste.
Coq au Vin, slow poached roast chicken breast and leg with a decadent deep red wine gravy and buttery mash. Loved the touch of salty crispy chicken skin.
A slab of slow roast belly pork topped with an equally generous black pudding crust. Tender and meaty rather than being overly fatty. The apple purée brought the required sweetness to this indulgent dish.
Both meals were served with chips and buttered vegetables, a true feast and you certainly would not leave here hungry.
Great value and friendly service. We would highly recommend a visit to Bridgnorth for this place alone. Make the warmth of @theroylebridgnorth your respite during the cold winter...
