Regrettably we entered this pup for food as it mentioned children’s play area and they served jacket potato which is what we fancied. Pub was pretty empty. Menu was limited and was up there in price when your advertising burgers at £15+ we expected some food made with effort to warrant the prices. The children’s play area was a used colouring book in the corner so we decided to make entertainment ourselves for the kids… 45 minutes after ordering we’re wondering what’s going on so I asked at the bar was told we’re next 5 minutes and it was or least one meal arrived. 10 minutes later we received the rest. 2 minutes after that I took mine back to the bar as it was disgusting. A hard potato very bland chilly. The kids persisted with rock hard chips that had no internals just a shell of hardness with nothing inside, I enjoy a triple cooked chip done right this was not that. Staff came over and asked if I wanted another meal but I said you have already wasted one hour of my time I’m not prepared to wait again and give you another hour of my time. I didn’t ask for a refund and none was offered. My partner couldn’t stomach hers either and returned it and asked for a refund which she got. The kids were upset at an over cooked burger he said thinner than McDonald’s but like a air hockey puck. For us it was the wasted time on a nice day we wanted to be back in the sun as the pubs quite dark inside so we upped and left having spent 1.2 hours and left hungry. I spent about £45, £17 was refunded and we had to go find food elsewhere. I don’t write reviews in anger and wait till enough time has passed, I try to offer advice which in this case I would honestly say give up on the food it really was terrible and your charging rates that other places charge but they put in the effort therefore deserve to charge that. One hour for any meal in an empty pub is...
Read moreWent for lunch on a coolish day to deliberately check on the value for money. Being food critics, had a look in and it was quite busy which is a good sign so found a table, selected, ordered, paid and waited. The service was OK - 10 - 15 mins so you would expect things to be cooked fresh and to order. WRONG!
One of us had fish and chips - £12.95 which we was looking forward to - sadly very disappointed. The fish was a perfectly shaped triangle, was a frozen fillet, batter overcooked, frozen chips and the whole lot quite sickly - the fish had a definite watery taste as it had been cooked too quickly from frozen so clearly NOT fresh in a fishing port. Mmm. We also had a plate of nacho's with chilli and garlic bread. Again, this was stodgy and microwaved although the garlic bread was hot. It wasnt finished. One of the party only had a sponge pudding - overcooked and definitely piping hot as it has been microwaved. Drinks (being a St Austell brewery tied house) were as expected very expensive so just had soft drinks (driving) which were also expensive - even for a soda water. Our bill was over £40.
Advice if you go there is ask what is microwaved and choose something else that is fresh. The place itself is very dark, in need of a makeover which could have been done before the season kicks in but clearly hasn't. Good luck if you go there as we certainly...
Read moreFour of us went in after dinner to have a quick drink. The pub was not busy despite some good live music, We wanted four drinks and had to wait for an extended time to be served...not sure why as the pub was not busy. When eventually a girl served us she was sullen and miserable and had clearly forgotten what smiling was about or indeed that it is an important component of bar work.
We had three goes at getting a gin and tonic, glasses were dirty...lipstick ingratiated the top of my girlfriends glass and when pointed out the sullen bar maid simply poured the gin from this glass into another one , ice appeared to be about as readily available as a Woolly mammoth; as was any sign of a smile or any modicum of customer service and respect.
I challenged the bar manager who was sitting behind the bar about the service (or rather lack of) that we were receiving ...she scowled "the girl is new and nervous and I have been helping her". I saw no sign of any assistance being given other than to provide additional education on how to have a non-friendly attitude and treat customers, the life and blood of a pub, with distain. I told her that it was clear why the staff were as they were...it was because of the "great leadership".
I have never been to Looe before...a lovely place that I would love to revisit, I had never been to the Ship Inn before...I never...
