Booked a table for five adults.I want to give a fair and honest critique as I hope this will encourage improvements. We are all Filey residents and love to support our local facilities so we took a punt on a Sunday roast at the Star.We were all greeted warmly and asked if we would like beverages beforehand.Due to social distancing the drinks were all brought out by a member of staff. We all ordered food, given a choice of meats, veg and meal size and kindly told when we could move inside nearer to service. The layout due to covid was well marked and notified and is testament to the attentiveness of the owners and staff. We all sat on a slightly wobbly table which we fixed with a stack of beer mats before service.Food waiting time was minimal and it all came together within a minute of each other.I personally had ordered a medium roast beef, which is where the experience started to wain somewhat. The thing I always get asked, having been a chef for 25 years is "do you complain if the food or service is not up to standard? " Well it's a difficult one sometimes.I largely try to avoid making a scene and turning into Gordon Ramsay and will enjoy it for what it is and move on to another experience. That being said It cannot go untold my roast beef dinner was a poor showing. One slither of beef does not constitute a medium roast dinner. The gravy was a maggie special, with zero meat stocks or a hint of a roasted and de glazed pan.The veg selection was adequate, but the portion size was more attuned to that of a child. The food really needs to pick in portion control and quality.Such a shame as we all love the star,it's staff and the beer (let's not forget the beer).Overall it was nice just to see family and celebrate a birthday and the star's atmosphere paid a big part in our enjoyment.A big up and final word for Ruby, who was predominantly our host for the afternoon.Attentive, gracious, hard working and a asset...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe visited The Star on Tuesday 29th August for my mother-in-law's birthday. I was a little apprehensive as we approached as the outside looked more like a pub than a restaurant and we'd wanted something a bit nicer for a birthday meal, but with options for the kids. We ate in the restaurant area at the back of the pub, which wasn't elaborately decorated but had a nautical theme, which is what you want when you visit the seaside and was very clean. The food was delicious! I had the lamb shank which was tender and flavoursome. My husband ordered the seabass which arrived with 4 huge chilli prawns on which I also tried, they were so good! And my husband said the seabass itself was equally as tasty. Our party also had the fishpie which was packed full of prawns and fish chunks and the belly pork which was a special of the day. All the food was so tasty, good portion sizes and you could tell it was freshly home cooked. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Would definitely go back here again. Never judge a book...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe have eaten in three pubs in the Filey area three Sundays in a row: The North Star at Flamborough Head, The Ship Inn at Muston, and The Star at Filey. All were nice enough, but The Star at Filey was particularly delightful the day we turned up. The food and the ale. To start with, our waiter, Max, all of 15 but so skilled and personable that he seemed much more mature and competent, knew everything about the menu, even how things were cooked. That is so rare with waiters, even though it shouldn't be. The Mushroom Pepperpot appetiser was a big favourite. It is simple, elegant and would be a star dish anywhere. I am taking that recipe home with me. The roasts and vegetables were perfectly cooked and flavourful -- and parsnips on the menu, too, thank you so much! Loved our meal. We...
