Bear with me...Many moons ago there was an Aussie chef named EJ who produced the most fantastic vegan/veggie roast in Brighton & Hove week in, week out...Y'know, colours that aren't beige, textures, vegetables cooked al dente etc. In the intervening 10 years, it doesn't matter how many good restaurant/peer reviews of Sunday roasts I have trusted only to find that those roast potatoes have been prepped and dunked in water the night before, with too sweet purees and gravy granules producing a baby food-like consistency, the eating of which is only possible with muliple alcoholic drinks. I don't eat meat really, i accept I'm the wrong audience. So it's Sunday, I want to eat lunch in a pub with some mates, who like to use their teeth to eat with, where do I go? The Urchin. The Jay Raynor readers will be in the restaurant in their pearls & Chanel and their boat shoes and pressed polo shirts ordering fish and oaked Chardonnay too loudly (it's fine, they'll be given house brewed Larrikin beers, oysters and low intervention wine instead). At the bar and outside there will hipsters and kids and dogs and house painters and Guardian readers who left their heels at home. It's fun, and friendly and accommodating and oh my gosh. TODAY my friends and I demolished the best paella we have had in the 7 years The Urchin has been slinging shellfish and craft beer. This iteration created by exceptionally talented chefs Luka and Jim i believe. The rice. Textured. Silky with paprika and oil. The mussel shells scrubbed within an inch of their lives. The softest of squid, the juiciest of prawns and a scattering of samphire. Next Sunday, don't listen to peer pressure. You don't need a roast dinner. You need paella (veggie/vegan options often on the Specials Board, if not, just get fries, they are delicious). Save me a seat outside, see you there 🙏

The seafood here is excellent, it's fresh, it's creative and it tastes fantastic. The oysters were exactly as they should be - fresh and clean. The highlights were the specials with some nice touches like the scallops with a chilli miso butter and the king prawns in a brioche bun with remoulade sauce. The whole (undressed) crab was good value but it's an effort to eat - as it is covered in a hot butter sauce making it a messy proposition, if you're experienced at breaking down a whole crab its not too bad but even I couldn't get it done before the rest went cold. Value wise the prices are about average for seafood - not too expensive, not cheap either. I'd say the lobster was perhaps priced a tad high compared to everything else but it will depend on season and demand. I would add the bar had an excellent selection of drinks to accompany the food, some unique craft beers paired particularly well with the seafood. While the clamato in the bloody / virgin Mary is a great choice. The disappointment here though was the service. It wasn't a particularly busy Saturday afternoon and there were 3 or 4 running front of house but there were times when no one was at the bar or even in the restaurant. We were asked for our order but needed a few minutes, 10mins later no one had even looked our way. One of the wait staff in particular looked like they did not want to be there, rolling eyes, making odd comments and just being a bit moody. However the rest of the staff were very friendly and nice, it was just difficult to get their attention in the first place.

Fresh and tasty seafood We came here for my boyfriend birthday since he had never tried a lobster before. As a seafood lover and I have tried many different seafood restaurants in different countries, I can tell how fresh it is here. My boyfriend tried the lobster for the 1st time and he absolutely loved it. Besides, we had 2 starters. My scallops was lovely but my boyfriend's fried mussels was too salty for us (a tiny minus point). Other than that, we loved the food. Dessert was not too special in my point of view. The waiter and waitresses were very nice to us with is a big plus point. A very big minus point to our dinner was that we had to dine with a bunch of rude people. They were so noisy, yelling, singing loudly. My boyfriend and I couldn't even have a conversation together due to the noise. The lady at that table was not only rude to the waiter and waitress but also rude to me since I tried to cover my ears to not listen to her disgusting singing. It was to the point where I got a headache and it ruined our dinner in a way. I highly recommend to come and try their seafood. If you're lucky enough, you won't have to dine with rude people.

Having recently developed a new found love for seafood my hubby brought me here for my birthday and my goodness what a treat! Every single thing on the menu sounded amazing an we had a hard time not ordering everything. They have a vast variety of beers and drinks and all a reasonable price. The set up of the place also works well for those wanting to just have a drink and those looking for a nice place for a meal as the two halves are slightly separated. As for recommendations we ordered the salt and pepper squid, the lobster hot dog, crispy crab, prawns, scallops, and the chocolate brownie with beet root ice cream - most from the specials board. Everyone was AMAZING but the favs were the lobster hot dog and the crispy crab and of course the brownie :) Can't wait to come back!! and also forgot to mention we left without a crazy expensive check even with all we ordered. Hard to beat a place like this and look forward to coming back to try more yummy plates.

What a gem of a place!! 🤩 I came here with my partner who LOVES seafood…I don’t eat any seafood whatsoever and the menu is almost exclusively fish, crustaceans or shellfish, so it was a little daunting…that being said, I had nothing to worry about - the vegetarian option was absolutely sensational and even the small bits of seafood I tried were really tasty!! The sauce served with the crispy squid was phenomenal. The pub has a fantastic garden and indoor bar area, both of which are inviting and dog-friendly, and a smart, secluded restaurant area. We sat in the bar. The service is exceptional - we were served quickly, the staff are knowledgable about the menu, and really personable. As someone who generally detests seafood, I can’t believe I’m saying this - but I can’t wait to come back! I could not rate this pub any higher ✨

There’s a much revered seafood place in the unassuming backstreets of Hove, and it just so happens it’s also a fantastic pub with it’s own microbrewery as well. The Urchin Hove brew their own beers on the premises under the name Larrikin and they don’t hold back on variety. Styles rotate, and on my visit I tried them all; a sour, a lager, an oyster stout, an imperial stout and an oat cream IPA. I think what I loved most about my visit was how the pub manages to make you feel both special and relaxed at the same time. It’s not trying too hard, you don’t need to be dressed up to the nines to eat out here, the service is friendly and comforting and the space so small that staff have time to make you feel important.
