I have been living in high wycombe for the last couple of years and most of time exploring coffee shops and cafes in the Chiltern's. I decide today instead to look for brunch in wycombe...
The works is targeted at brunch with a menu that ranges from pancakes and bacon through to eggs royal and then crepes, ice cream and waffles. I settled in with eggs Benedict on waffle and a cappuccino. The coffee was good with a nice head, the eggs Benedict was not quite to my taste but lovely none the less. One thing I wasn't keen on was the coffee mug, it had no handle. It more resembled a plant pot in denby finish with some deformation to the site to place your fingers in.
I then followed this with a cookie monster milkshake which was fabulous, you get to choose your ice cream flavours to go with the toppings. I asked them to hold the cream, I am not a fan of this new trend of a mountain of cream enough to stand a fork in. What came out was lovely, with a cookie and two Oreo cookies balanced on top and drizzled with chocolate sauce. What I especially like was that the Oreo crumbs were were on a sheet of wax paper round the bottom of the Mason jar. This meant that as went though the milkshake you could sprinkle a little on top and eat it with a spoon. With there being enough Oreo crumbs to do this several times throughout the milkshake.
Thr aesthetic was like many places now industrial, pleasant enough to sit for a couple of hours. The only downside being the harsh acoustics from the large flat surfaces, this place would be loud when fully packed.
Although not an issue for me, if you were looking to avoid children and teenagers it is unlikely in this venue. The ice cream just attracts them, as it should...
Overall I will very likely be heading back to the works, the staff were fantastic, with both speedy service and an understanding that I for the most part wanted to be left in peace to read and muse over life. It was also reasonably priced therefore If your in the area and want brunch this would be my current top...
Read moreI love The Works! My fiancée and I go there every fortnight or so for a date night, and they never let us down. We've tried loads of their menu, from crepes and waffles to Sundaes. Everything is made with genuine care, and the staff are always super friendly and seem like they care about your experience, rather than being mindless drones like in other stores. In conclusion - the food is amazing, the staff are amazing, and the price is nowhere near as high as it could be, I'm very impressed. I've never had a negative experience with the works and will continue being a customer there, they've certainly won my loyalty.
(This part not necessary to read, and not related to the rating I gave): The only vaguely negative thing I could say is the tip system seems a little strange. On one occasion, I was told by my waiter (who was very friendly and I wanted to tip him a fair amount) that tips didn't go to them, it went to the store. However, another time I was served by a waitress and the option to tip was presented to me. I'd love for this to be made completely clear for the future, as I get such great service I'd love to...
Read moreHorrible!!! My tummy actually mow hurts from eating there this morning. The most stale bacon. I asked for another one sbd it was stale too. Other items cold. I don't believe the food was cook fresh. When I got there at 10am, I was told they open at 11am. There was just 1 member of staff doing some admin and kitchen was closed. I waited around the area with kids to celebrate a birthday breakfast, got there at 11.04 and ordered. Food came within 15mins but it was cold and horrible. Nachos was also stale. Poor kids just tried to not spoil the day for tge birthday girl. I really should have remembered my last experience there last year where I met with a horrible staff who gave me very watered down milkshake. It was literally like the consistency of coffee. It only all came back as I sat to relieve eating bad food. Big mistake that will never happen again. The only positive of this was the server. Now I have to deal with unsettled stomach...
