Booked into this hotel whilst at a nearby music festival. Illness and chronic pain inhibits camping. Had one room for me and my partner and one for our son. On arriving we were told we were getting a 20 pound discount and rooms were being upgraded. Family room for me and my partner and a mini double for our son. This seemed nice. However, the family room was directly next to another and the walls in this hotel are thin. Family next door had two children running round screaming laughing and playing at 2am, parents appeared to have no awareness of the noise created. Noise started again at 7am each morning. The room was also opposite the creaky noise stars and main door constant noise from that and people outside the room, then the room faced onto the busy road. Impossible to relax in there despite the fact it was clean, roomy, and bed was comfy. We took advantage of the breakfast on the Saturday, but went elsewhere the next two mornings, it wasn't enjoyable. The boy liked his room, said it was comfy and quiet. But for me and my partner it was a very mixed bag. I think upgrading couples to a family room in this place is not the best, sometimes us grown ups want a few hours of grown up time without the sound of other peoples poorly behaved kids and the parents screaming at them. Completely...
Read moreWent here on a Sunday evening, after finding the Woolpack pub didn't do food.
I went in the riverside entrance and initially got the impression it was like a Harvester restaurant.
It was fairly quiet, and the downstairs bar was closed.
There was sports TV showing in this area if you wanted it.
The main bar was up a flight of about ten stairs.
The menu was pretty good. Quite a lot of choices, from carvery through to vegetarian and everything in between.
I ordered a mushroom pie with seasonal veg and gravy, along with a cider. Together it cost £12.50.
To be honest I wasn't expecting a lot, but the food arrived in under fifteen minutes and it was very good. Good consistency pastry and gravy, and the vegetables still with a slight crunch.
Both the lady from the kitchen and the lady behind the bar were friendly and helpful.
This is also a place that can accommodate everyone from solo diners, to large groups.
Accessibility at street level is only limited by a small step up into the lobby.
There is men's and ladies facilities and plenty of TV entertainment too.
Being right in the centre of town it's handy for several car parks nearby and has its own small car park at the rear.
An enjoyable visit.
I went again the following day, and my experience confirmed that this is a very good...
Read moreQuite shockingly bad. I had been given room 17. This is up 2 flights of narrow winding stairs. With no offer of help for my baggage. The room was clean but there was a definite musty smell which suggested damp. The windows were too small and too high to escape out of in the event of a fire. The Bathroom was marked with black spots and the shower pole was rusted. The bath was incredibly small (I'm just over 171cm tall and even I could only sit in it with my knees bent. The room was incredibly outdated. The wallpaper was peeling off and was torn in many places. The carpet was worn and threadbare. The heating was provided by a single noisy plug in electrical unit with no instructions. The mattress was very lumpy. The door to the room was a very very solid door which was key operated (not card) with a chain for added security. The problem with that again is in the event of a fire, the Firefighters would have had an extremely difficult time getting through it. I'm left wondering if this door was replaced from another place because there were signs it had been attached differently in the past (see photo). I would give it zero stars but it gains one star because the staff...
