The Undergrad — Restaurant in Exeter

AVOID this cafe if you want to have a pleasant experience. I had been coming here for months for coffee/to study and had enjoyed, however this was ruined today. I had been there for 15 minutes whilst I waited for my friend to join me for coffee, I had already purchased a drink and was quietly getting on with my work. This was around lunchtime and staff had attempted to move me from my table to join a stranger, to free up space, to which I agreed if this was absolutely necessary, but I also added several times that I had someone joining me, so other customers would be welcome to join my table alternatively. This was slightly irritating, however in a desperate scenario, I could understand this. This occurred several times and I offered the other half of the table for other customers too. My friend then arrived and whilst she was ordering and paying for her drink, I was told that I was “uncompromising” and that I hadn’t listened and had disobeyed their colleagues. Staff told me to “get out” even though my friend was ordering. This was unacceptable and extremely unprofessional, not to mention very rude. I continued to offer my table to free space, but I was told that I “had had my chance”. It was clear their priority were all other customers, besides students and existing ones. I received ill-mannered looks from all members of staff as if I had done something utterly shocking in trying to retain my table for myself and my friend. I found this extraordinary as I had bought a drink and been no trouble at all, had offered up my table and my friend was buying a drink. I had to frantically stop her from paying as they had evicted us from our table. They were clearly overcrowded and concerned about losing out on business for this period and clearly other customers’ experience, but not those who already had purchased food/drink. I had planned to order more food for lunch, however they did not seem to care as the staff member did not let me and rudely kicked me out. This is appalling service. I have never known any coffee shop to so poorly manage busy periods and give so little regard to their customers. I am truly shocked by this experience as I have been a loyal customer, but clearly this means nothing if you are a student. Note: lots of other students were given time limits and “warnings” to leave, despite this being situated within a student accommodation. I found this an interesting customer strategy given that there are countless other coffee shops of equal value, if not more, in Exeter. We usually love going here so decided go there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was 8:25am, not too busy. We ordered knowing that my husband had 1 and 1/4 hours before leaving for a meeting. By 9:15 we still hadn’t received our order and people after us had. We spoke to a member of staff and she said we’d have to wait another 10 minutes before receiving our breakfast, this didn’t leave us much time so we said that wouldn’t be possible. I wrote a reasonable comment about the wifi and gave it a one star. This was based on the fact that multiple times I had come in and spent money buying a coffee, assuming the internet would be fixed and then realising I couldn't work there because the internet was so poor.
