We were recommended this restaurant for the quality of their Thai food. Unfortunately wether they were short staffed or not, or we needed to book or not you allowed us to be seated. You were serving 10 other people. We were greeted rudely as soon as we walked in, customers who were sat on a nearby table noticed and moved seats to create a warm welcome to us (thank you to that lovely couple) you should have done this not them. Once seated menus were placed on the table and we happily made ourselves comfortable. There was some brief commotion in the kitchen between staff but we didn’t take to much notice, until the lady serving us hurried past us and said she was ill and had to close the restaurant put the closed sign on the door and disappeared upstairs. No one explained anything or came back to serve us. Another friend had to pop her head around the kitchen to finally see what was going on. We were told we weren’t being served so we left. As we left a couple walked in the door, we told them lady’s sick and restaurant is closed. They were seated by the 👩‍🍳 chef. As we left and waited outside to decide where we now went to eat we noticed that the lady had miraculously recovered. My friend was upset and went back inside to ask if she was ok? And were they serving again. When she didn’t come back out I felt the need to go back in. I’ve never seen anything like it rude aggressive and behaving very rudely. I hope you never have to feel the way we did yesterday. I am happy to come back and speak with you on my own if that helps. But I will not be called a liar, told that I called you when I didn’t, or apologise for treating you like a human being. As I left I apologised for any misunderstanding as I didn’t like being shouted at. You told me you had vomited upstairs and then come back and started serving again. Do you think your customers would like that? I hope you find a way to make your business a good one, I’ve heard your food is good, for your sake try and get some customer service training and or another member of staff to help you? If it was genuine what you were feeling when you had a group of customers, then I am sorry and I genuinely hope you get the help...

Went for dinner on Saturday 23rd Feb with the Family for a 8.30pm sitting. Started out ok but clearly short staffed as they were turning people away at 8.45. Chef was bringing out the food. Starters were fine but a tad expensive then had to wait approx 40mins for main course which was Pad thai x3 and a sweet &chicken. When we asked the chef, who asked us if everything was ok, we said how much lnger for main. She then went into a diatribe on how everything cooked fresh and not precooked. Very rude...did no apologise and we were not even offered a free drink. Pad thai came out and was smallest portion i had ever seen. Not worth the money. Front of house was good but would not go there again. Cant believe this place has a 4.7 rating. Should have gone to So Thai

I dont usually get into arguing on line however feel i must respond to the Owners Comments on my review (see below). Firstly, we have no ties the other restaurant in question - i rarely critique but in your case your attitude and customer service was severely lacking. Secondly, you were short staffed otherwise why turn people away. Front of house admitted it would be a long wait for food. No apologies for the long wait - yes i did turn up 10 mins later with my eldest son after my wife and youngest son had seated. But that still does not detract for the long wait between course. Thirdly, we were not andsay what you state, more frustrated at the long wait and the very small portion size. Finally, if thats how you treat people when they come to your home then i suggest they eat before they come to your restaurant so they dont go hungry. If you cant take constructive criticism you are in the wrong game. Clearly you cant as your last sentence which suggests we are related to people from another restaurant is totally and...

Overrated!

For starters: Tom Yum soups that me and my wife had was saturated in the taste of lemon grass. No creaminess and could not taste any other flavour. Roughly £6 each.

For mains: I had a Massaman curry with a 14 day salt cured beef. The only good thing about it was the sauce which was flavoursome. The beef might as well been bought off a super market shelf and be cooked just as tender. I had rice on the side with it (as you do with a curry). It still did not fill me up. The Massaman curry on its own without rice cost nearly £20.

My wife ordered Pad Thai. She was dissapointed with it, she says my Pad Thai I cook at home tastes better.

Conclusion without dessert: I have been to many Thai restaurants before around England. Most of them are cheaper and always good quality, just like the Benjarong in Gloucester. But dont bother with Bankok Canteen, unless they make changes to there recipes and improve the dining area, rather than looking like a shack. The place is...

Visited as a group of 6 this evening (Saturday). I'd recommend booking if you can as we saw several couples turned away as they were very busy. Staff were very welcoming, we were approached for drinks quickly. Menu has a really good mix of veggie and vegan options, as well as a lot of info on where their menu is sourced from. There seemed to be a good focus on local produce. I like very hot food and ordered the Talay Pad Cha. In terms of spiciness I'd give it a 6/10, but some in my group who don't regularly eat hot food assured me it was definitely above a 10, so if you find food particularly spicy aim for the meals that are medium spicy or less. The seafood tasted very fresh, and the flavours were wonderful. I had banana fritters for desert which were flavourful. With a starter, main and dessert + a tea coming to £33 for myself, I thought the price was really reasonable for the quality you get.

What a fabulous spot for dinner! Absolutely delicious Thai food that goes beyond the standard fare (though the usuals are on the menu too if you want to stick to them) - the aubergine dish was a particular highlight. Service was great and we could tell things were freshly made but they didn't take too long to arrive at the table. We were pretty full after our main course but shared a banana fritter for dessert anyway, assuming it'd also be delicious - and we were right. Loved that there were so many vegan options and everything is gluten free (no issues with gluten for us but you could not tell the food was 'free from'). Thank for for the delicious meal!

Canteen describes the layout of the restaurant but the atmosphere is much more, it's a really cute place. The food is really good, full of flavour without extreme spice. Locally sourced with amazing attention to detail (e.g. the sculpted carrots) it's like nothing else in Gloucester (in a good way). We went on a weekday evening and it wasn't busy. They do takesway. They accept contactless over £30 so you can pay on phone. It is Thai food, so if you don't like Thai then it's probably not for you. But if you've not tried it before I'd say it's the Thai place to go in Gloucester (So Thai is a close second). It's well worth the money.
