I went in tonight as a family of 4 for our one and only meal in Gloucester. Firstly I have to say the food was delicious, no complaints from any of us, although the carafe of red wine felt like it had been poured from a kettle it was so warm..That said we would not return but for other reasons. Most places are fearful of losing their businesses and are taking covid precautions extremely seriously... not this place. We were admitted without being asked whether we had checked in via the NHS app.. no details were asked for our taken.... very poor. The blond lady that served us had her mask below her nose all evening and presented all of our ordered drinks by gripping them all around the top where you would drink from... my 11 year old even commented should she be doing that! She had an attitude i didn't like from the start and when I queried the cost of the prosecco on the bill.. she said I presumed you wanted the large glasses without asking...wow.. do places still do that old trick for a few extra pennies....The young guy behind the bar knocking up cocktails etc kept his chin warm all evening with his mask... it never made it up over his lips alone his nose...Several groups walked in and out with no mask... people went to the toilet etc again no mask and not one person reminding them of the rules. A man who looked like he was in charge had his mask in the correct position every time he walked past but he paid no attention to the numerous people around him who didn't care about their safety nor the safety of others.... like I said the food was decent but we didn't feel they were taking the covid issue seriously so we will not return... we will stay safe.

I received a 50% off voucher, so thought I should give them a second chance. Very good food and service, which means I can increase my rating from 2 to 4 stars. Well done for good customer service by replying to my original review. Original review: Pretty good food and service, but ... It is unusual to get nachos with chicken fajitas until you realise they are hiding the fact there isn't much chicken or roasted peppers underneath. Also, the floured torillas were so small it didn't matter that there wasn't much filling!! I prefer to choose whether to tip, so it really annoys me when a 10% service charge is automatically added to the bill.

Wow, the coal kitchen is definitely worth a visit. I've been to so many different restaurants and can say I've not had a meal this good in a long time, the food, atmosphere and staff were perfect. We really enjoyed our dining experience in the Coal kitchen. We had a nice cosy table for 2 with a nice low light and a candle and i find things like this add to making the night enjoyable. We had chicken fingers for starters with a garlic dip, then my main was halloumi skewers which was sooooooo good. My wife had the tang green cod which was cooked to perfection. Get yourself along to here for a perfect dining experience.

I had a meal here on the weekend. We were seated quickly and the place had a nice feel to it. Our first lot of drinks took 20 minutes to arrive, but we weren't too bothered as we had nowhere to be and were enjoying the day. We then had our order taken; the menu looked good and reasonably priced, until I realised that none of the meals came with any sides, which obviously bumped the prices up quite significantly. But we were treating ourselves so we didn't mind. We waited 30 minutes and someone asked if we wanted more drinks. We then waited another 40 minutes and still no food. The couple next to us, who arrived at the same time as us, had ordered, eaten and left at this point. I asked a waitress if she could check where our food was as we felt like we were forgotten. 2 minutes later, she returned with our food, giving us the impression we had been forgotten. But the food looked delicious and we were starving! We had two mouthfuls and she came to check everything was ok. We said yes. My partner then realised that his ribs were a little dry and cold, but again, we were so hungry as it had been over an hour we had waited. We decided that we would mention the issues. The waitress seemed quite shy, but went to speak to her manager to see what she could do about the price (nearly £70!!) She came back and said she'd taken the amount of the ribs and the service charge off. She then said that we should have mentioned it when she asked how the food was. But at that point, we had only just started eating. She was quite rude to us at this point and our day was a little tainted. I want to mention that the restaurant wasnt nearly as busy as the others in the area and there were plenty of staff (some who were just having a...

Disappointing. Valentines night, Our drinks were ordered and brought to the table quickly where our food order was then taken.

After choosing from a very poor menu, It took almost a full hour for 3 tiny overcooked/burnt chicken skewers with some garlic mayo, and 4 tiny halloumi fries to arrive to our table. While delays are always possible in a restaurant setting, especially on valentines, there was no communication & it did not seem that busy actually. Waitress then said the starters would be free.

Main course arrived, the 8oz Sirloin i asked to be rare was medium, unseasoned & had clearly been cooked from straight out of refrigeration. It was unbelievably chewy & the knife provided barely cut the garlic butter i had, let alone the steak. Garlic butter was that solid & wouldn't melt on the steak, so I had to hover it over the little candle on the table to soften it.

My partner had the chicken & chorizo skillet which had zero flavour, chicken was overcooked. It just tasted of tinned tomatoes. Not even sure if it was Chorizo, tasted more like pepperoni as it has zero heat.

Table next to use complained, sent food back & for the two hours we sat there all I could hear was the bloody chefs pinging the service bell. Over & over again, couldn't have a conversation without that interrupting every other word. Chefs are awful.

Our server was lovely, She did a good job considering but seemed embarrassed. It's not a good sign that when she came to clear the plates at the end that she didn't ask us how the food was, it's almost like she assumed.

oh and the table was wobbling & had to use a napkin to steady it.

Avoid, it's not the Coal Bar & Grill from a...
