What a fabulous experience! After visiting the Castle and seeing the picturesque small town of Eton we fancied a French meal. We were not disappointed! Our staters were classic escargot in the shell and roasted octopus with strawberry purée and lightly fried gnocchi (the daily special). Both were excellent and we were so pleased we both (my spouse and I) had ear to ear smiles after we finished that course. For our mains my wife had the bacon wrapped pork roulade and I had the duck breast with stewed strawberries in on orange infused sauce that was to die for. The duck breast was perfectly cooked to a rare temperature and was so tender the knife seemed superfluous. The skin was crispy and the fat was expertly rendered to reveal a taste that pleased my palate to no end. It was accompanied by potatoes dauphinase cooked with just the right amount of garlic and cream. My dish was paired with a glass of negramarro primativo from apulia , recommended by our fantastic server, Michael. He, and the other staff were experts at their craft who never hovered but were there the moment we needed them. Our deserts were marvelous as well. My wife had the "Eton Mess" which was chantilly cream, strawberries and meringue in a chalice , very much like a deconstructed pavlova, out of this world taste! I had a simple affogato that ended what we both agreed was the best meal we have had 5 weeks into our 7 week vacation. The wonderful staff, led by an incredible expert chef are to be commended for a spectacular culinary experience. We will come back and we will pass the word, if you are in Eton you must eat there, not to be missed!! I only wish I took more photos but I was so busy eating I...
Read moreVery dishonest response from owner. We were very disappointed with this place. Perhaps given the reviews we were expecting good but got decidedly poor. Maybe we just caught them on a night where the real chef was on a day off??Either way the menu looks good but the food is mediocre at best. The service was inconsistent between the two staff on the night. One was helpful the other clueless. The flavours and quality of cooking were bad. Even at the most basic level. Cold plates, which I hate, especially with fish dishes. Sauces in all dishes were watery and flavourless. Dauphinois potatoes were undercooked and the cream had split, simply awful. If our meal was typical they must be spending a lot of time getting family members to send in positive reviews. I just don’t get why the review scores are so high and the restaurant is so bad. Maybe they are just complacent. They clearly have little regard for their customers and £20 compulsory service charge is an absolute joke. Best avoid this place, they also leave dishonest replies to feedback, one dish ( moules mariniere) was sent back after two bites as they tasted horrible.I did suffer the...
Read moreWe ordered mussels for the three of us and two of them were good and the third was disgusting. We tried them, all of us and they were just bad. And it was weird, as the two others were nice. I guess they need to think about quality.
Thank you for your reply, btw, it just shows that you can’t accept your own mistakes. You probably didn’t mix the mussels while cooking them, that’s why the top ones tasted awful, while the ones in the middle and in the bottom were alright. I cooked mussels myself, I ordered them in different restaurants, you don’t need to be a chef in the restaurant to understand that something is wrong. You provided something that wasn’t eatable.
