Well!! Where do I start..... I’m absolutely gutted!! I used to love this pub and all that it stood for! I am currently away with my dad on a lads holiday. We have in the last 10 minutes walked into this pub and all we could smell was cooked Sunday lunch which almost smelt like walking into a Toby Carvery. The pub was empty than usual and there were no dogs which was a massive surprise. After noticing this I then found on the main door there was a sign saying that no dogs are now allowed in the pub which surprised me massively whereas less than 50 m away in the Albert they allow dogs up until 9:30 pm?!?!. I thought this was a proper traditional in the heart of the street demonstrated all the traditions of the Lake District including taking you to a pub and sitting in a proper pub with a proper good atmosphere . This unfortunately wasn’t the case. This pub looks to have sold out like so many others unfortunately. Also to my surprise when looking at the bar being a camra member. The beers on display and on offer were absolutely atrocious. The pub that I remember was a nice quiet and quiet country pub that allowed man’s best friend and walkers hikers and campers alike to all mingle in together and have a good pint. This sadly is not the case this pub is now an eatery. What a...
Read moreThe atmosphere and the very friendly staff were a real bonus on visiting the place. After a 10 mile hike we staggered through the door and collapsed in the seats and ordered some tucker and drinks. Regrettably both the Scampi and the Chicken Wings were a joke. The Scampi (5) looked like they had come from a freezer bag and were coated in thick batter. Inside was a tiny piece of scampi and a whole lot of air. My chicken wings (5) were small, and also bulked up with this tasteless batter and after picking all of the stuff off there was not much left inside to satisfy an appetite. Piles of chips were not an adequate substitite for an inadequate meal. Seriously, chucking a few chicken wings and scampi in a light oil and giving them a quick turn around in a pan, minus the batter, would have produced a far tastier meal. I suspect the aim of the batter is to make a small meal look bigger. My wife did however enjoy her jacket potato and the gentleman beside appeared to have quite a decent pie. The three meals (2 mostly uneaten) and 3 drinks set us back 45 pounds or just under 90 Australian dollars, certainly not good value for the inadequate quality...
Read moreI've been visiting the Hole in t'wall for years, maybe 7/8 at least! It's ab absolute gem of a pub right in the heart of Bowness, two minute walk from the mere, the hills, the shops and the main Street of the town It's a very historic building dating back to 1612!! With loads of original features too, I've not met anyone who doesn't like the building and the decor inside, Charles Dickens was a visitor too and if he liked it then you know you're into something good! The staff are genuine and naturally friendly with advise on the ales, food and offers they have on. They have a nice menu with the classics and some special offers, vegan options too which is great, great prices and portions too! Nice stocked bar with everything you could need with local beer, cider and spirits, I think what's nice with this pub is it's locals aswell and tourists visiting. It's also got a lovely little outside patio area which is a bit of a suntrap if the weather's good! My favourite pub them ways, no...
