We had made a reservation for a Thursday evening in August and arrived approximately 5 or 6 minutes before, only to be told quite brusqely that the the bistro was not open yet, not quite the welcome we were looking for. The loud rap music was also unexpected. When seated, we were informed that two items on the menu that we had particularly looked forward to were not available, the rack of lamb and the fillet steak. We ordered the scallops as our only starter, the lamb rump as a main and the portobello mushroom with mixed vegetables as a second main. Also ordered a sauvignon blanc. When the wine arrived it was a Pinot Grigio and we had to ask to have it replaced. The scallops themselves were superb, cooked to perfection. The black pudding accompaniment was not as it was hard (overcooked? ) and quite indigestible. As a Northern woman born and bred, I know what black pudding should taste like and this was not it. We were expecting two seasonal vegetables but only one arrived and no explanation was given although in fairness we didn't ask. We also heard, presumably from the kitchen staff some discontent about the heat and how long they had been working. Again something that as customers we should not be concerned with. We did not order dessert. Overall I think the quality of the food was mixed and very hit and miss. The service was also patchy, we observed other customers arrive and wait a quite some time before they were served and it was not a particular busy service. We also waited some time before plates were cleared and we were asked about desserts. Overall the dining experience was mixed and would suggest that the dining experience be aligned with the best of the food experience. Until that happens I certainly will not return. The level of the bill was expected but not the best value I have experienced...
Read moreNot an nice experience at all. We have been coming to grasmere for many year but thought we would give this restaurant ago NOT GOOD.
Booking was not the easiest, arriving to a packed restaurant with a terrible greeting, the young boy waved his arm to tell me come here!! Honestly I was shocked, he asked our name and he said this is it and laughing and pointed to our table and walked away, bazar behaviour! not can I take your coats , it was the most unpleasant start to a meal.
Sitting down were surrounded by dogs sprawling on the floor I could hardly move my chair to sit down, as a disabled person I had to step over a dog to go to the ladies. The staff didnât care and the dog owners either. I have a dog but would never take my dog to an evening meal . Not appropriate at all.
My starter was ok nothing fantastic, scallop overcooked our filet stake was dry, and not medium as I asked for, carrots also dry, potatoes tasted like instant potatoes and my plate was filthy underneath.
Apart from the food and hand waving the dogs I had too step over, the restaurant was freezing, I felt like I was outside eating my meal bearing in mind were were at the start of November!! I was so uncomfortable my husband brought this to the young mans attention and he looked blankly at us and said we leave the back door open itâs easier for us, we again said but you have paying customers who donât want to sit and feel they have too put there cost on eating a meal , his reply was , and what do you want us too do! Itâs easier for us and an other blank stare, followed by I donât understand the question. At this point we cut our night short , paid the bill and would not be returning bad service bad attitude and not...
Read moreWe booked a table for 20.45 online arrived about twenty to and had a short wait while our table was prepared. The waitress came over and took our drinks order and presented with the menu so while having our drinks we ordered from the menu informing the server that my partner was gluten intolerant. My partner ordered sea bass and as it says on the menu saute potatoes and I ordered the pork .After waiting half n hour we were asked if we required another drink as our meals were running late we ordered another drink which we received and also received three small triangles of bread and a pot of olive oil as a dip which was laughable as staff had already been told my partner was gluten intolerant. When the meals finally arrived my partner was confronted with sea bass and what looked liked small boiled in their skin potatoes coated in butter not saute as described .My partner brought it up with the server as my partner is a qualified chef she described how they should be cooked as was told that's how we do it here The cost just over 90 pounds this is not a go at your bistro it is a review of our experience I think a gesture of our second drinks being complimentary would have been better than 3 small pieces of bread and olive oil it was not our fault the food was late .We do except the venue was full but knowing Grasmere I would expect it's not the first time it's been...
