Is this a pub or a restaurant? It doesn't seem to know. Folk in Harrogate might be happy to pay for what it offers. I probably wouldn't have gone had I not had a present voucher for the place. As we had that we "dined out" and had three courses. Whilst the ambience of the place looks great, from the outside and on entering (there were quite a few people in, and several dogs too), it turned out to be really noisy and not really the kind of place I want to to spend £100+ on a mid week meal with just a couple of drinks. The staff were very attentive...perhaps too attentive. It's difficult to answer "is everything ok, when you've barely had a mouthful". Whilst the service was good the portions were small and not filling, despite us having three courses. The place reeked of strong garlic and truffle oil on arrival and whenever dishes containing these were carried through the restaurant. For a starter I had tuna, that was very meagre mouthful sized pieces seared. My partner had beef shin parcels. They weren't bad, but not great either. I had duck and my partner had the risotto. Both were fine but small portions. The fish and chips looked better value. For sweets my partner had the sticky toffee pudding and said there was too much bicarb in it. The cheese course was the best value for money. I had a pint of beer that was just on the turn though I didn't send it back. After that half of neck oil was £2.90 which, for Yorkshire feels steep. A 125ml glass of Sauv Blanc was £5.80 A bottle of water was £3.50. We were dumb not to just have Harrogate tap water. A 10% service charge was added to the bill which I never like though probably I wouldn't have given in full. The waiting staff were fine. The chef needs to increase the portion size to get returns and the owner needs to think about what they want to provide, if it's not working out for them. There are so many places to try, this wouldn't be one...
Read moreFantastic food, flavours and menu - however, the tiniest portions, beyond acceptable.
The scollops for starter - possibly the smallest baby scollops I’ve ever had, 3 of them like the size of a 2p piece, amazing flavour though with crispy bacon bits and popcorn, but scollops were so small they had gone dry.
Then ordered the lamb and a hake main course, £25 / £29 each.
3 bite sized pieces of lamb and some calerac cream. Was cooked beautifully but was smaller than a tapas side dish.
The Hake my wife ordered, was the size of a fish finger, with a handful of sweetcorn. And a basil sauce - strange combo but Again flavours amazing
The bill came to £107 for this, with a large glass of wine and 2 pints… genuinely felt completely disappointed, not on flavour but in such a small meal. And that’s not just a greasy lad talking, my wife eats like a sparrow and even she was complaining
Such a shame, considering we go in here so often for a drink, as a great location and always great atmosphere- Definitely wouldn’t recommend eating here unfortunately, not with the price considered, it’s not a fine dining restaurant it’s a pub.
Thought about ordering desert but after the two courses already I thought the brownie might come out as a chocolate button so decided to leave.
Would love to hear from you guys which chef decided tonight’s meal was acceptable. And the thought process behind it.
I did mention it to the waitress and she said she agreed portion sizes are small, prices are tall,
Maybe rebrand as a tapas menu and...
Read moreTo be honest we were excited to try this place after seeing their website and sample menu.
In reality, it's a lot of money for little food. The pic of the goats cheese starter must have had the 'McDonalds' treatment using a fish eye lens. Mine was half the size of their pic. Meagre would be a fair description. A friend ordered the £12 prawn starter and got 3 prawns. We both had Arancini envy in the end. It's not often one can get excited about a rice ball!
There weren't many mains to choose from to be fair so between us we sampled most of the menu. Hint: have the fish and chips and forget the rest. It was the only thing close to being fulfilling as a dish.
With the prices they charge they ought to also invest in some art for the walls and some soft furnishings. With the open area of the bar area being right next to the restaurant, the noise was so deafening we had to shout and cup our ears to maintain any kind of conversation.
In the end, although still hungry we decided to skip dessert for fear of being served a £10 sliver of something sweet which just sticks in the throat.
Other than that, it's a nice place with a good outside area and they are v dog friendly.
Although they had also run out of cider by 8pm on a Friday night so cannot vouch for how competently the pub-side of it is managed.
Tip: order some sides with your mains even if they do hint at accompaniments - you'll need them to fill up the empty space...
